🌍 In the last month, floods have hit Nepal, Sudan, and Vietnam particularly hard. In Nepal, a catastrophic flash flood sent river levels surging by 9 meters in just 30 minutes, resulting in hundreds of deaths. In Sudan, flooding devastated already vulnerable communities, destroying homes and critical infrastructure. In Vietnam, torrential rains triggered deadly floods and landslides, displacing thousands and damaging agricultural land.

At the same time, extreme heat and dry conditions are fueling devastating wildfires. Algeria battled 154 wildfires in a single day, with deaths and injuries reported, while Colombia recorded hundreds of wildfires across more than 200 municipalities.

These crises extend beyond immediate destruction, disrupting health services, threatening livelihoods, and placing further pressure on already stretched health systems.

As climate risks intensify, building climate-resilient health systems is no longer optional, it is essential.

The Cli-Health Program (CHP) at the AUB Global Health Institute (GHI) joined the 2nd Conference on Climate Change and Health in the Arab Region (CCHAR-II 2026) in Amman, Jordan, held under the theme “Policy Translation and Implementation”.

For CHP, the conference was an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, exchange knowledge on ongoing climate–health research across MENA, and better understand the realities of translating evidence into policy, including implementation barriers, available resources, institutional responsibilities, and the priorities of decision-makers.

The discussions also provided valuable insight into the common climate–health challenges faced by countries across the region, while showcasing effective climate-resilient strategies and solutions and exploring opportunities to adapt and scale these approaches in other Arab countries.

🌍 The AUB Non-Governmental Organizations Initiative (NGOi) engaged virtually in the Ford Foundation’s Weaving Resilience Network Global Gathering in Nairobi, bringing together hubs working to strengthen the resilience of civil society across the Global South.

As part of the “Radical Solidarity” session, NGOi’s Manager shared reflections on operating in conflict settings, exploring how conflict affects organizational work and wellbeing, and how organizations adapt while sustaining their work amid uncertainty.

💻 The discussion highlighted the challenges conflict creates for programs, resources, partnerships, and staff wellbeing, as well as the ways organizations continuously adapt to remain responsive to their communities.

Bringing together humanitarian leaders, policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and innovators from around the world, DIHAD provided a space to exchange perspectives on how we can strengthen systems and build the capacity of professionals in the face of today's challenges.

For GHI AUB, the gathering was an opportunity to contribute to conversations at the intersection of health, humanitarian action, and civil society institutional strengthening.

Dr. Shadi Saleh joined eHealth Africa’s strategic roundtable, “Designing Fundable Health Systems in Fragile Contexts: What Actually Works for Scale and Investment,” at the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid & Development Conference and Exhibition (DIHAD) 2026, exploring how health system solutions can move beyond pilots toward models that are scalable, sustainable, and fundable. 🌍

Reflecting on the realities of health system investment, Dr. Saleh emphasized that improving patient outcomes and reaching more people are not enough to ensure long-term impact. Health system solutions also need a sustainable economic model to support their continued implementation and scale. He also highlighted the importance of making evidence accessible beyond academic circles, ensuring that research can inform policymakers, communities, and decision-makers.

The International Health Regulations (IHR) have guided international cooperation on health threats that cross borders for decades. The current IHR (2005) provide a legally binding framework for countries and WHO to detect, report and respond to public health risks.

Following lessons from COVID-19 and other global health emergencies, countries adopted new IHR amendments in 2024, introducing a “pandemic emergency” alert, strengthening equity and access to essential health products, and establishing National IHR Authorities.

With these amendments now in place, the States Parties Committee for IHR Implementation will meet for the first time on 31 August–2 September 2026, bringing countries together to support implementation through cooperation, shared learning and exchange of best practices.

🌍 From early warning and surveillance to coordinated action across human, animal, and environmental health, the systems built for outbreaks like CCHF also strengthen our ability to prepare for and respond to future pandemics.

🌍 The AUB Global Health Institute (GHI) participated in the MARCH Regional Virtual Kick-Off Meeting, marking the official launch of its MARCH sub-grant project.

The project aims to strengthen climate-health capacity among Primary Health Care workers in Lebanon and Jordan through an AI-enabled digital learning intervention.

🤝 The kick-off meeting brought together researchers from across the region, creating a space to connect, share approaches, and explore opportunities for cross-country learning on climate change and health.

Follow along as this regional collaboration turns research into stronger, more climate-resilient health systems.
