How the “Kafala” system shapes the mental health of migrant domestic workers in Lebanon is the focus of a new LAU study by Dr. Jasmin Lilian Diab and Rhea Al Riachi (MA ’23). The system makes foreign workers extremely dependent on their local sponsors. Published in “Migration Studies,” the research highlights how legal dependency, isolation, and discrimination, compounded by crises like the Beirut port explosion, shape psychological distress, and calls for migrant domestic workers' full inclusion under Lebanon's labor law.

A recent LAU study highlights how the Kafala system affects not only workers’ legal and economic security, but also their mental wellbeing.

Multiple sclerosis symptoms often mimic other conditions, making diagnosis a complex process that demands expertise across specialties. At a recent grand round, experts in neurology, ophthalmology, and pharmacy explored how imaging, biological markers, updated diagnostic criteria, and eye examinations each contribute to earlier and more accurate diagnosis. Organized by the LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine's Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development, the session highlighted the power of multidisciplinary collaboration in improving patient care.

From ophthalmic clues to updated diagnosis criteria, a multidisciplinary Grand Round on Multiple Sclerosis shows how data-driven, collaborative care is transforming diagnosis.
