The Faculty of Arts & Sciences, the Center for Arts & Humanities, alongside the Department of English and the Theater Initiative, has the pleasure of inviting you to a talk by Alia Alzougbi, Artistic Director and CEO of the UK’s Shubbak Festival, titled “Rehearsing Otherwise: Art, Diaspora, and the Politics of Imagination.”

The talk will examine the critical role of art during periods of global crisis, reflecting on the power of imagination as both a form of resistance and a strategy for collective survival.

Founded in 2011, the Shubbak Festival is the UK’s largest biennial festival of contemporary Arab culture, presenting innovative work across theater, dance, music, film, literature, and the visual arts.

The Center for Arts and Humanities and Department of English are hosting a talk by Cambridge professor in literary studies/humanities, Charles Forsdick, through the Global Humanities Network on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026 | 5:00 PM, at Basile Antoine Meguerdiche Conference Hall-IFI Auditorium, Basement Level

TRANSLATING CULTURES - THE HUMANITIES NOW! PERSPECTIVES FROM THE UK
Charles Forsdick is Drapers Professor of French at Cambridge and the Co-Chair of the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics. He is a lead fellow for Languages at the British Academy and honorary professor at Liverpool University's Centre for International Slavery. His talk, titled The Humanities Now! Perspectives from the UK, offers an overview of debates about the current state and future directions of the humanities, including a focus on questions of policy and broader social contexts in the UK. It presents the work of the British Academy in this area, including subject mapping, development of humanities skills, and international collaboration. It also outlines new approaches to interdisciplinarity, providing as an example the national "Translating Cultures" thematic programme funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The presentation condudes with a reflection on two specific but illustrative areas: the role of the humanities in debates about translation and Al; and discussions about the meaning of the Global Humanities in the twenty-first century
