🎨 IGCSE Art & Design | Developing Observational Skills Through Portraiture

Our IGCSE Art & Design students recently explored portraiture as part of their ongoing portfolio development, strengthening their observational and practical drawing skills.

Through close observation of the human face, students examined form, proportion, line, texture, and expression, learning how these elements work together to communicate character and emotion through art.

This practical study encouraged students to look more carefully, experiment with their techniques, and develop greater confidence in translating what they observe into their own artistic work.

At HISV, Art & Design provides opportunities for students to develop their individual creative voice while building the technical skills, critical thinking, and attention to detail that support their IGCSE journey.

🔬 AS Level Chemistry | Precision in Practice

Careful measurements, thoughtful analysis, and scientific curiosity came together as our AS Level Chemistry pupils explored volumetric analysis through acid–base titration.

During the practical session, pupils prepared a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution and used it to determine the concentration of an unknown sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄) solution. This brought classroom theory to life, deepening their understanding of chemical reactions, quantitative analysis, and the importance of accuracy in experimental work.

At Heathfield, practical science creates opportunities for pupils to think critically, work methodically, and build confidence in applying their knowledge—nurturing their growth as capable, inquisitive young scientists.

As part of their campaigns, candidates created posters and/or videos sharing their ideas, what they could contribute to the school, and the skills they would bring to their roles.

At our special Student Council Assembly on 11 September, candidates had the opportunity to present their campaigns to pupils from Years 7–13 and share why they would be a strong representative for their school community. Candidates without a video took to the stage to present in person, showing confidence and courage along the way! 🎤👏

Pupils and teachers then had the opportunity to vote on 14 and 15 September, choosing the candidates they felt would best represent their school community.

We are incredibly proud of every candidate who stepped forward, shared their ideas, and took on this leadership challenge. Student leadership is not simply about holding a title. It is about listening to others, taking responsibility, sharing ideas, and making a positive contribution to the school community.

🎻 A Special Musical Experience for Our Primary Pupils

Our Primary pupils had a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty of live music through a special violin performance by Eri Imamura, a professional violinist and music educator.
A graduate of Tokyo College of Music, Eri continued her studies in Vienna, specialising in violin performance and music education.
During her visit, pupils listened to the expressive sound of the violin and explored how music can communicate emotion, tell stories, and inspire imagination. This meaningful experience encouraged them to appreciate the arts, develop curiosity, and connect with music beyond the classroom.
At HISV, we value opportunities that enrich learning and support pupils in developing creativity, confidence, and a broader understanding of the world around them.
We are grateful to Eri for sharing her talent and experience with our Primary community and for creating such a memorable musical experience for our pupils. 🎶✨

Our Year 1 pupils enjoyed a hands-on Mathematics activity using colourful cubes to explore sorting, counting, and recognising patterns.

By connecting the cubes and grouping them by colour, pupils developed their understanding of key mathematical concepts through practical learning and play. Activities like these encourage pupils to think, explore, and build confidence while making Mathematics engaging and enjoyable.

🔬🧪 Year 10 Combined Science | Exploring Animal Cells

Our Year 10 Combined Science pupils took their Biology learning beyond the textbook through a hands-on practical investigation using samples from chicken hearts.

Working carefully in the laboratory, pupils prepared their own specimens, used microscopes to observe cell structures, recorded their findings, and produced detailed magnification drawings. Through the process, they strengthened important scientific skills including accurate observation, careful use of laboratory equipment, evidence recording, and scientific communication.

Practical investigations like this give pupils the opportunity to connect scientific theory with real biological structures, helping them develop a deeper understanding of the concepts they study in class.
