From a Simple Email to a Life-Changing Journey
Like any other day, I was checking my personal emails when I noticed a message from Brother Mohamed Shiraz with an interesting subject line. Out of curiosity, I opened it and came across a name I had never heard before—Speechcrafter. The email was about a workshop, and since I am always eager to learn new things, I registered without giving it much thought. At that time, I had no idea that this simple registration would become the beginning of a wonderful journey into Toastmasters. In fact, after registering, I completely forgot about it.
At the same time, I was pursuing my MBA through the University of the West of England via Bristol Institute, Sri Lanka, and I had planned a trip to Sri Lanka from 15th to 24th January to sit for a physical examination. Just before my trip, I received a call from an unfamiliar number. When I returned the call, a gentleman introduced himself as Brother Wafiq from the Speechcrafter team. He informed me that I had been selected to participate in the workshop, which would begin on 19th January and consist of six sessions.
I explained that I would be in Sri Lanka during the first few sessions. Brother Wafiq kindly pointed out that I would only miss two sessions and could still benefit from the remaining four. His encouragement convinced me to join, and I completed my registration.
Before the workshop started, Brother Wafiq encouraged me to prepare an Ice Breaker speech. When I returned and joined the third session, I delivered my first speech. The experience was truly memorable. The two-hour session felt like only a few minutes because it was highly interactive, engaging, and filled with learning, fun, and valuable experiences. It was far more than a typical English-speaking workshop.
As the sessions progressed, the enthusiasm of the participants grew day by day. Due to the overwhelming interest, the organizing team even added an extra session called the Grand Finale. One of the highlights was a debate on the topic “Is Social Media Connecting or Isolating Us?” I was assigned to the team arguing the “Isolating” side, and with the guidance of Bindu Ma’am, we prepared and delivered our arguments successfully. The event concluded with a wonderful Iftar gathering, creating lasting memories for all participants.
Soon after, I received another call from Brother Wafiq informing me that I was now eligible to join a Toastmasters Club. I joined the Desert Pioneer Toastmasters Club, and on my very first meeting, I was invited to deliver my Ice Breaker speech. Although I was nervous and my heart was racing, I completed my speech successfully. To my surprise, the club members rewarded me with a standing ovation. What touched me most was that the applause was not merely for the speech itself, but for the encouragement, support, and motivation they wholeheartedly offered.
I found Toastmasters to be like the “big brother” of Speechcrafter—following a similar structure but offering even greater opportunities for learning, growth, and personal development. The warmth, sincerity, and willingness of members to help one another inspired me deeply. From that moment, I knew I wanted to continue this journey and develop myself further.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Bindu Ma’am, Brother Mohamed Shiraz, Brother Wafiq, Brother Husain, the entire Speechcrafter organizing team, and all members of the Desert Pioneer Toastmasters Club for their guidance, encouragement, and support. I wish them continued success and look forward to growing alongside them in the years ahead.
This journey began with a simple email, but it has opened the door to confidence, communication, friendship, and lifelong learning.
