Kuwait's Al-Sumait Prize is an annual award to advance economic, social, human resources, and infrastructure development across Africa.

Kuwait’s Al Sumait Prize congratulates Dr. Christian Happi, who as a co-leader of The Sentinel Project, which has been awarded $100 million by the prestigious MacArthur Foundation. The Sentinel Project initiative “that promises real and measurable progress in solving a critical problem of our time”, the grant honours Happi and his co-founder, computational geneticist Dr Pardis Sabeti, who have already saved an uncountable number of lives. Together they have helped identify, and therefore stem, potentially disastrous outbreaks of yellow fever in Nigeria, mpox in Sierra Leone and Marburg virus in Rwanda. Dr. Happi’s organization The African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases won Kuwait’s Al Sumait Prize for African Development in 2021. The Al Sumait Prize is proud to support the recognition of individuals and organizations dedicated to the advancement of science, education, and development in Africa.
