The definite article is used before certain kinds of proper nouns, in particular, the names of mountain ranges (Az Alpok - The Alps), hills/mountains (A János-hegy - the János hill), rivers (A Duna - the Danube), seas (a Fekete-tenger - the Black sea), lakes (a Balaton - the Balaton), regions (az Alföld - the Great Hungarian Plain), streets, roads and squares (a Rákóczi utca/út/tér - the Rákóczi Street/Road/square), countries consisting of more than one unhyphenated word (Az Amerikai Egyesült Államok - The United States of America), newspapers (A Magyar Hírlap - The Hungarian Chronicle), books (az Édes Anna), and institutions (A Magyar Tudományos Akadémia - The Hungarian Academy of Sciences). No article is used before the names of continents (Afrika - Africa), countries/states of one word or more than one hyphenated word (Magyarország - Hungary, Észak-Írország - Northern-Ireland), counties (Baranya megye - Baranya county), cities, towns, villages (Budapest). In colloquial/informal language the definite article is often used before personal names (first names or surnames) - A Tamás ("the" Thomas), A Varga doktor úr ("the" Varga doctor). Note that unlike English, the definite article IS used with uncountable nouns, and plural countable nouns even if the expression has a generic reference; A sör veszélyes lehet. - (the) Beer may be dangerous. It refers to beer in a generic sense.

The indefinite article in Hungarian is 'egy', which mean "a" or "an" in English. A fish = egy hal. The definite article (singular) is "a" or "az". The sun = A nap. Az eső = the rain. The variant "a" is used before consonant-initial, the variant "az" is used before vowel-initial words. However in some dialects (for example in Győr-Mison-Sopron) county they use only "a" before each noun.

Even though Hungarian grammar is indeed very complex, learning to use the language in simple situation such as in the shop, or in the street asking for directions is not difficult at all.
