Self Introduction (자기 소개)

I love helping others and have worked with adults, children, and people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. I have always been fond of literature and have been a bookworm all my life. I enjoy movies and would love to help explain English as it relates to culture. I have also studied business and worked in the corporate world and would love to share my expertise.
Q1) How did you find out about WithTutor and how were you introduced to your students?
A1) I wanted to make use of my spare time to do something productive. I heard about WithTutor online awhile back and started working with them. I got introduced to my students via requests on the WithTutor homepage and was excited to teach adults again after working with younger students for quite some time.
Q2) How would you describe the progress of your students?
A2) My students have been doing their best during our classes and there has been a noticeable difference from before we started working together until now. One of my students, Rachel, has gained a lot of confidence and has been able to take what we learned in class to her work in the office and it has helped her communicate more with her co-workers in English.
Q3) Please describe your teaching style.
A3) For my teaching style, every student is different, and I go over goals with students when we first meet, and we decide together the best course of action for our lessons. I have a wide range of experience with students of all ages, and have background in Fine Art, Business, IT, Management and more so these qualities have helped me with connecting to my students and planning good strategies for class time. Whether it was job interview prep, basic grammar review, pronunciation, or issues within a global office environment, we tackled them all various classes.
Q4) What were the benefits of teaching with WithTutor?
A4) I think a convenient point about working with WithTutor has been dealing with communication issues as well as marketing and sending new students to me. That has been a big benefit, as well as the ability to set your own schedule.
Q5) Any suggestions to fellow tutors?
A5) I think most teachers could be nervous if they are starting off doing 1-1 teaching, but don't worry too much and find ways to connect, encourage and engage your students and classes will be enjoyable for both you and your students!"

Set a Conversational English foundation - Native teachers often forget the basic strategies of holding a meaningful conversation since it happens naturally to them. It is important to present foundational elements. For example, how to assert opinions. ask questions and use follow-up questions to keep a discussion flowing. Giving students a single topic and letting them figure out conversational techniques on their own may not be the most effective method.

Native tutors in Korea charge about 50,000 won per hour. However, it really depends on your qualification and experience. If each session lasts for multiple hours, it may be better to lower your rate to make the costs less burdensome to the students. However, if you are an experienced tutor traveling to teach an hour long session, you could most definitely increase your rate to compensate for your travel time.

Hagwons, or private academies, are popular amongst students in Korea. Many students attend multiple hagwons, one for a specific subject, in order to improve their test scores. Many attend English hagwons in hope of becoming better English speakers, but does it actually improve their English skills? Yes and no. Main focus of most hagwons is to improve test scores for Su-Neung, a college entrance exam. Some hagwons employ native English speaking teachers to teach conversational English to students. Even though these classes are taught in English, students rarely have enough opportunity to speak or have a discussion in class which does not allow them to become effective speakers. Learning a new language requires lots of practice and repetition, which the hagwon environment cannot offer.

One of the most popular private education sectors in S Korea is a hagwon or private academy. Students as young as 5 years old start attending these institutions to learn English. But is the hagwon environment ideal to effectively learn a new language?
Students in these institutions lack the attention from the teachers as well as the opportunity to speak in class.
Here are some benefits of one on one learning: 1. Unique learning experience 2. Full attention and opportunity to speak 3. Self-paced/directed learning 4. Improves self-esteem and confidence 5. Freedom to ask questions

Aimlessly memorizing new English vocabulary every day will not help you become a better English speaker. Repetition is crucial in learning a new language but you need to make sure it is effective repetition. Effective repetition is using the language all day and every day. Speak with a native speaker as frequently as you can to expose yourself to not only the language, but to the culture behind the language as well.

Parents believe the pace of education being taught at school is very slow. While students are learning the English alphabet as a third grader, the students who have been actively learning through private institutions are able to already speak and write English at an intermediate level. Therefore, pressure arises where all the parents feel obligated to enroll their kids in private classes, such as hagwons or private tutors.

Watching TV shows or movies is not only a great way to learn how to speak English fluently, but also one of the most fun ways that can be used while learning English.
