✉️Letter of Continued Interest Guide

Deferred or waitlisted at your dream school? Don't worry. There's still a chance to upgrade your application. Follow our LoCI guide & message us to view a successful sample letter from our past student.

1. Make sure the school accepts letters of interest (some explicitly say that they do not accept additional materials). See if they accept via email or portal. (some have specific prompts and word count). It should generally be 1 page long otherwise.

2. Thank the admissions officer for reevaluating your application and reaffirm that the school is the best fit & your first choice. State that you would absolutely attend if admitted. You can mention any great impression of the school you have. You can add a figurative hook.

3. Provide new information such as updates on extracurricular activities, any awards won, projects you’ve begun, or improved GPA or standardized test scores (if applicable). If you don’t have any updates since the submission, still try your best to expand & elaborate on your current activities.

4. Explain 2-3 “Why College” traits: location, exclusive factors, compatibility (e.g. the interdisciplinary nature of your curriculum perfectly aligns with my interests…). Include any personal experiences or impression of the school: campus visit, online info session, alumni testimonials.

5. List up programs and activities you want to pursue at college, including major curriculum, study abroad programs, and student clubs. you can have repetitive info from your original app, but make sure it’s more detailed.

6. Plans for the next 6-9 months before going into college (e.g continue to build my startup by… so I can refine my skills / prep myself for college). You may mention larger career goals (e.g. leading up to pursuing my goal of becoming a changemaker in the engineering field).

7. You may also add a witty, eye-catching ending tied to your intro or hook. Thank the reader again and sign off.

A paid program where a student is matched to an individual graduate or enrolled in a specific program designed to help students learn about research and actually perform research. There is a research fellowship competition, which is highly selective, that helps a student publish research.

2. Girls Who Code Summer Program

Engineering & Computer Science / Selectivity: medium / Prestige: high

Girls who code is a widely-known, highly-regarded extracurricular. Although involvement in the club isn't inherently unique, you can distinguish yourself by taking on leadership positions. Offer two programs: A 2-week immersion program or a 6-week self-paced experience, both of which teach introductory to intermediate CS concepts. Girls who code as an organization tend not to be selective, but the programs do have limited space available.

3. Pioneer Academics

All Majors / Research / Selectivity: medium / Prestige: medium

Pioneer Academics is a selective online research program that connects high school students worldwide with university professors to conduct college-level research in various academic fields. The program offers one-on-one mentorship, rigorous research training, and the opportunity to publish research papers. It is highly regarded for its academic intensity and is recognized by top universities for its emphasis on independent research skills.

4. Economics for Leaders

Humanities, Econ, Business / Selectivity: low / Prestige: medium
This is a popular leadership summer program on-campus, to choose from many different Ivy League / Top 10 colleges. Highly recommended since selectivity is low (easy application).

5. UC Santa Barbara Research Mentorship Program

All majors / Selectivity: high / Prestige: high

A summer program that engages qualified, high-achieving high school students from all over the world in interdisciplinary, hands-on, university-level research. Students will be paired up with a mentor (graduate student, postdoc, or faculty) and choose a research project from a large list of disciplines offered by the program each year.
