Q. Is there sparring in Tai Chi Chuan?
Sifu H. Won Gim: Yes, there is sparring in Tai Chi Chuan. But, it is done very differently than the other external martial arts, such as boxing, karate, MMA, etc.
Once you have learned the 'peng, li, an' single and double person exercise, the single hand power push hand, and the Two Man Sets (which teach you some concept of how to use some of the techniques), you will gradually do more and more free style sparring push hand, which is also called Tai Chi Chi Sau.
Tai Chi Chi Sau is where practitioners begin to learn how to apply the techniques that they have learned through the Solo Long form, the Fast form, San Sau, the Dynamic Push Hands, etc. At this stage, the practitioners don't have to practice any specific techniques. All actions and reactions are based on the opponent's movements. As a result, the practitioners develop the ability to listen, yield, and attack with greater speed and control. Therefore, sticking hands is an exercise to train offensive and defensive techniques.
