”치매도, 우울증도, 자폐도 실마리는 뇌 밖에 있을지 모릅니다“🦠

개교 80주년 특집 in USA
세 번째 이야기는 ’면역으로 뇌 질환을 치료할 수 있을까?‘입니다.

감염과 암을 넘어 대사질환, 우울증, 치매, 자폐까지.
우리 몸의 면역 시스템은 생각보다 훨씬 다양한 질환과 연결되어 있습니다.

어쩌면 뇌 밖에 있는 면역 시스템이
뇌 질환을 이해하고 치료하는 실마리가 될지도 모릅니다.

Our third story explores whether the immune system could hold new possibilities for treating brain disorders.

From infections and cancer to metabolic disorders, depression, dementia, and autism, the immune system is connected to far more conditions than we might expect. Could the immune system outside the brain offer new clues to understanding and treating brain disorders?

[ep.3] 바이러스에게 배운 RNA 생존법🦠

우리 몸에 들어온 바이러스에게는 중요한 숙제가 있습니다. 증식에 필요한 단백질을 만드는 것이죠. 그러려면 ‘단백질 제작 설명서’인 mRNA부터 지켜야 합니다. 시간이 지나면 이 설명서가 분해되기 때문입니다. 바이러스는 영리하게도 우리 세포의 시스템을 빌려 mRNA를 지킵니다. 그렇다면 이 ‘RNA 생존 기술’을 우리도 활용할 수 있지 않을까요?

서울대 생명과학부 김빛내리 석좌교수 연구팀은 바이러스 337종을 분석해, RNA를 오래 유지하고 단백질 생산을 늘리는 다양한 전략을 찾아냈습니다. 그중 눈에 띈 것은 RNA 조절 요소 ‘Pt1’입니다. 많은 mRNA 끝에는 분해를 늦춰주는 ‘보호 꼬리’가 있는데요. Pt1은 짧아지는 꼬리를 다시 늘려줄 효소를 불러옵니다. 실제로 Pt1을 붙인 mRNA는 세포 실험에서 반감기가 약 3배 길어졌습니다.

이번 연구를 통해 바이러스에게서 ‘단백질 설명서를 오래 지키는 법’을 배운 셈입니다. mRNA는 백신을 넘어 다양한 질병의 치료에도 활용할 차세대 기술로 주목받고 있습니다. 그 가능성을 넓히려면, 필요한 단백질을 충분히 만들 수 있도록 ‘설명서’를 오래 지키는 것이 중요하죠. 바이러스의 생존 전략이 더 나은 mRNA 백신과 치료제를 만드는 실마리가 될 수 있는 것입니다.

이번 연구 성과는 국제학술지 Cell에 게재되었습니다.

[ep. 3] Learning RNA Survival Tricks from Viruses 🦠

Once inside our bodies, viruses have an important job to do: make the proteins they need to multiply. But first, they must protect their mRNA—the “instruction manual” for making those proteins. These instructions break down over time, so viruses cleverly put our own cells’ machinery to work keeping them intact. Could we borrow this RNA survival trick from viruses?

A team led by Distinguished Professor Kim V. Narry of SNU’s Department of Biological Sciences analyzed 337 viruses and identified a range of strategies that help RNA last longer and boost protein production. One standout was an RNA element called Pt1. Many mRNAs have a protective “tail” that helps slow their breakdown. As the tail shortens, Pt1 recruits an enzyme to extend it again. In cell experiments, adding Pt1 to mRNA roughly tripled its half-life—the time it takes for half of the mRNA to break down.

The study shows how viruses could inspire new ways to keep mRNA stable for longer. As mRNA technologies expand beyond vaccines to potential treatments for a wider range of diseases, keeping these protein-making instructions intact is an important challenge. Viral survival tricks like this one could offer new ideas for improving mRNA vaccines and therapeutics.
