(National Liberation Day of Korea)

is a significant public holiday in South Korea, celebrated on August 15th every year. The term ”Gwangbok“ means ”restoration of light,“ symbolizing the end of Japanese colonial rule over Korea, which lasted from 1910 to 1945.

On this day in 1945, Korea was liberated following Japan‘s surrender at the end of World War II. Gwangbokjeol is a day of national pride and reflection, commemorating the struggles of those who fought for Korea’s independence. It also marks the establishment of the South Korean government on August 15, 1948.

The holiday is observed with various ceremonies, including the raising of the national flag, singing the national anthem, and remembering the sacrifices made for the country‘s freedom. ☺️
