CanWest English started in Vancouver, Canada in 2004 and moved to Seoul, South Korea in 2008.

Our Mokdong location opened in 2009. CanWest has a unique approach to learning that blends the best of western and eastern education. Educational Philosophy:


CanWest's educational philosophy is partly rooted in progressivism; we focus on critical thinking and understanding our goals in learning instead of relying on rote memory. In addition, we teach social and educational responsibility and pro

mote life-long learning. Our purpose is to build core academic and social skills, with a focus on developing a student's ability to research and self-study. Our students learn to question what they read and hear, and to reorganize and utilize the information they obtain into original content. Being able to synthesize independent ideas using what they have learned from several different sources is a main goal for students so that they can be successful at an international level in the future. Students work towards a true understanding of content, being able not only to memorize new information, but to explain it to others in English. At CanWest, we encourage student participation at all levels of class, using Socratic Questioning to assess and build comprehension as well as to increase writing and speaking fluency. CanWest encourages a dialogue (open conversation) between students and teachers in which students are encouraged to question the teacher often. CanWest recognizes that even young learners have intelligent and relevant ideas to contribute, and we want to give them the skills and the opportunities to express those ideas. Rather than rely on endless objective testing, we combine standardized tests with teacher-developed assessments, as well as regular in-class speaking and writing exercises, to measure student progress. We strongly believe that our strategies will allow students to be more successful in their academics all the way through university and beyond. Student learners, who complete our program, will be secure in seeking learning opportunities, have an excellent ability to understand oral and written English communications and be able to effectively express their learning. Our aspiration is to develop our students into thoughtful, intelligent contributing members of society.
