Why do South Korea and Japan continue to struggle with historical disputes despite shared security interests and deep economic ties? This article argues that diverging historical memories, shifting domestic politics, and the lack of early institutional frameworks prevented the two states from reaching the kind of stable reconciliation seen in post-war Europe.

[Call for Papers] HanPil: Studies on Korea and the Philippines Vol. 7

: Studies on Korea and the Philippines is a refereed journal in English published by the Korea Research Center, University of the Philippines.

Under the special theme, “De-globalization, Transnationalism, and Diaspora between Korea and the Philippines,” HanPil Vol. 7 (to be published in 2024) wishes to shed light on past and present forms of migration between Korea and the Philippines, any changes or significance in time of de-globalization, and policy suggestions to enhance transnational movements between Korean and Filipino nationals. This theme is also in line with the Korean community association’s commemoration of its 100th year of migration history, recorded since Korean revolutionists stepped on Philippine soil during the Japanese occupation of Korea.

HanPil invites potential authors from various disciplinal fields to contribute manuscripts that touch upon issues and aspects of Korea-Philippines’ relations as well as those that discuss contemporary affairs related to Koreans and the study of Korea in the Philippines, and Filipinos in Korea.
