Today, AMCHAM Korea hosted a Policy Talks session with Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) Chairperson Biung-Ghi Ju for a policy dialogue on Korea’s fair trade policy direction and overall competition policy environment. Serving as a follow-up to an initial meeting with AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim held in November, the meeting outlined the KFTC’s policy priorities, including supporting SMEs, building a fair competition system that enables an innovative ecosystem, creating a safe and reliable consumer environment, and establishing the infrastructure necessary for a fair economy. He highlighted the importance of continued dialogue between global companies and the KFTC for strengthening Korea’s global competitiveness as an investment hub. We are grateful for Chairperson Biung-Ghi Ju and the KFTC for their active engagement with the global business community in Korea.

Yesterday, AMCHAM had the honor of hosting General David H. Petraeus, US Army (Ret.) and a delegation from KKR for a roundtable meeting with key members of the global business community in Korea. Joined by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim and senior executives from leading U.S. and Korean companies across industries, General Petraeus shared his perspective on industrial cooperation amid a shifting geopolitical landscape and how the U.S. and Korea can balance rapid innovation in AI with global security.

We extend our sincere appreciation to General Petraeus for his thoughtful engagement, and to KKR’s Chung Ho Park and Gearóid O'Leary for making this important dialogue possible. We would also like to thank Reform Party Leader Lee Junseok for joining the event, and note that invitations were extended to National Assembly members of all political parties. AMCHAM remains committed to fostering conversations that strengthen the U.S.–Korea economic partnership and support Korea’s continued leadership in the region.

Yesterday, AMCHAM Korea hosted an Insights Session in partnership with Bae, Kim & Lee LLC (BKL) under the theme “Enactment of the Yellow Envelope Act – Key Developments and Strategic Responses” to help businesses understand how the new law may influence their operations. Foreign Attorney George (Hyojin) Lee and Partners Hongsun Jo and Ben Gyowoong Gu of BKL provided an overview of the Yellow Envelope Act and key issues that affect companies, citing landmark case studies and major relevant court decisions. The event also outlined practical strategies that companies should utilize to prepare ahead of any disputes. We would like to thank everyone who joined the event, as well as BKL Managing Partner Joonki Yi and Senior Advisor Hwajin Park for helping to make this event possible.

On November 25, the AMCHAM Education Committee hosted an informative session on "How AI is Reshaping Education and the Skills of the Future." The session explored transformative impact that AI has had on learning, teaching, and workforce preparation across sectors. The session featured presentations from Joshua K. Park, Campus Dean of George Mason University Korea, and Gareth Thomas, Director of Technology at Dulwich College Seoul, who offered insights into integrating AI into educational curricula, focusing on how institutions must prepare graduates for a future where AI is deeply embedded in nearly every professional function. This was further examined in a panel discussion with Paul Smith, Director of Business Administration, Dulwich College Seoul, Kimberlie Fair, Assistant Professor at George Mason University Korea, Daniel Helliwell, Educational Technology Lead at Dulwich College Seoul, and Hyejung (Heather) Han, Korea Team Head at PERSOL Consulting Korea, who stressed the importance of strengthening the link between current educational practices and the changing requirements of future workforce readiness, ensuring students are equipped to lead in an AI-driven economy. This morning, AMCHAM hosted National Tax Service (NTS) Commissioner Lim Kwanghyun in a roundtable discussion on how to further enhance Korea’s attractiveness as a global investment destination. Led by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, the AMCHAM delegation shared insights on the tax and regulatory challenges foreign companies encounter in Korea and emphasized the need for greater predictability and clarity. Commissioner Lim outlined the NTS’s initiatives to support foreign-invested companies operating in Korea, including a two-year deferral of routine tax audits for companies increasing investment in Korea, enhanced support for corporate and individual tax filings, and tighter safeguards to prevent double taxation.

We would like to thank Commissioner Lim and the NTS for their commitment to continued dialogue and responsiveness to the international business community. AMCHAM looks forward to continuing to work closely with the NTS to build Korea as the premier investment destination in the Asia Pacific.

AMCHAM Korea delegation met with Democratic Party Leader Jung Chung Rae today to discuss deepening U.S.-Korea economic and tech cooperation. During the discussion, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim expressed strong support for President Lee Jae Myung’s “ABCDE” priorities and highlighted initiatives to position Korea as a global hub for AI, Biotechnology, Content, Defense & Aerospace, and Energy. They also emphasized the importance of regulatory alignment, labor market flexibility, and addressing non-tariff barriers to attract U.S. investment and top global talent.

We would like to thank Democratic Party Leader Jung Chung Rae and his team for engaging with the global business community in Korea. We look forward to continuing its engagement with leaders across all political parties in the Korean government to advance innovation, strengthen bilateral economic cooperation, and enhance Korea’s role as a regional business hub.
