An E-2 visa is a work visa issued to non-Koreans that allows that person to legally teach and earn money. It is only for public/private schools and academies, a teacher seeking work in a university would need a different visa (E1).

Factors to consider before beginning visa application
1. Gathering all necessary visa documents can take a long time. It is important to have all documents ready before coming to Korea. Start the visa process as soon as you have signed your contract.
2. During the first month in Korea you will need to take a blood and urine test. This will screen for drug use and STI/STDs (or other transmissible blood diseases). Important: If you are not sure about current health then take a health check in your home country. If you fail these tests you will be asked to leave the country, paid for by yourself.
3. Your documents will all need to be apostilled. An apostille is a certificate of legalization, it proves that the document is not fake and it can therefore be used in any country. This process will take time and is needed for BOTH the criminal record check and copy of diploma. The apostille can also be costly so make sure you get it right the first time.

Documents required for E-2 visa Sponsorship:
• Valid passport (will not expire within a year)
• Apostilled and notarized complete copy of Degree/Diploma from an English native speaking country
• Apostilled and notarised Criminal record check (more details below)
• Updated resume
• Official sealed university transcripts
• 6 Passport photos (standard passport photo size: 51mm x 51mm)

Time Outlook for visa Processing:
From start to finish the total visa process can be anywhere between 30-70 days. It is crucial therefore to begin your criminal background check and start researching how to apostille your documents.

Steps to Visa Process Getting your Criminal record check
1. The first step in your Visa process is getting your criminal record check, this can take anywhere between 1-4 weeks and it needs to be notarised and apostilled.
2. Check your countries requirements for getting a criminal record check. Each country will have different requirements and processing times.
3. Tip: It is worth adding a cover letter to your application. It should state that you are seeking to get a work visa abroad and therefore need the original document, an official signature and if possible notarization of the document.

Important
•Korean immigration will not accept any criminal checks issued more than 6 months prior.
•The Original CRC must be submitted to Korea, not just a copy of the CRC. Canadians are not part of the Apostille agreement with Korea. This means that Canadians do not get their documents an apostille but rather get it verified. Read after step 8 for more information.

Collect your university diploma and get it notarised
1. While you are waiting for your criminal record you should get your degree/diploma notarised. This is needed in order to get your document apostilled.
2. Search online for a local notary (most solicitors). Bring ID, the original diploma and a copy of it. To get the copy notarised it should be inexpensive and be done right there and then.

Print out your updated Résumé and E-2 health form. Collect the other documents (passport copy, photos, transcripts)
1. The E-2 Health form is short and simple. Important: Korean immigration will reject any form that states positive to any drug use or sexual diseases. Apostille your Criminal record check and Diploma (Canadians scroll to the bottom for information on verifying documents)
2. You will need to apostille your documents. This is important as it shows the document is not a fake and can therefore be trusted and used in different countries.
3. You will need to have you Criminal record check and Diploma notarised. Normally the criminal record check will automatically be notarised (the FBI for example acting as the notary). If there is no signature you will need to email the body you sent it to and ask if they can give an authorized stamp/signature.
4. Prices of apostilles can vary from country to country, USA is roughly $ 8 and the UK is £30 . Apostilles must be Federal (national).
5. Tip: Search ‘How to Apostille (diploma/criminal record check) E2 visa (UK/USA etc)’ for up to date information on government websites. There are also plenty of blogs offering step by step guides.
6. Note: Apostilling is done through the government, there will be sites that offer the service but act mainly as middle men. Couriers offer quicker results than standard mailing services and may be vital if you are unable to do the apostille yourself (living away from home). They do charge a higher rate. Start your process early and you can avoid the service.

Send your documents to Korea via Courier service.
1. Important: Send your documents only via a courier. It is much faster and reliable. You would not want to lose and restart your documents.
2. Some example Couriers; FedEx, Purolator, UPS and DHL. Remember to write down your tracking number.
Wait for your VIN Number:
1. Your VIN (Visa issuance number) will be received by us and then emailed to you. This is needed with your blue documents to finish your E-2 visa.

The Korean consulate with the blue documents
1. Write the VIN on your E2 Visa Application and bring your blue documents to the nearest Korean Consulate.

2. You have two choices here:
A. Bring your documents in person, come back when they say. This can take between 2 – 4 days.
B. If you do not live within close proximity to the Korean Consulate you will can send your documents via courier (DHL, UPS, FedEx). Include a return envelope with a tracking number as well to be sure your documents won’t be lost in the mail (4-12 days). If you feel it is taking too long (more than a week with no reply) Try ringing or emailing the consulate to ask if they have received your documents or how long it will take.

Passport with visa: Completed
Your passport should now have an E2 working visa stamped into one of the pages. This finishes the visa process. You will now need to complete your health check within 90 days upon arrival in order to collect your ARC

2. Collect your university diploma and get it notarised
3. Print out your updated Résumé and E-2 health form. Collect the other documents (passport copy, photos, transcripts)

Canadian verifying process
The visa process differs slightly for Canadians. Instead of getting an Apostille a document must get ‘verified’ from a Korean consulate, it is effectively the same thing.
1. The Diploma must be notarised as laid out in step 2.
Important: The CRC must be notarised as in the same province where you CRC was preformed. This will be the province the police station is or the Commissionaires office you attended. Notaries can be found easily using the internet or a phone book.
Tip: When applying for the criminal background check write a cover letter explaining you need it notarised/authorised.
2. Bring you background check in person or send it to the closest consulate. Note: Going in person is quicker and saves money (assuming the consulate is within travelling distance) Fees and processes are subjected to change. Be sure to check the latest information on the consulate websites or give them a call. If sending your documents you will need; Envelope with the nearest consulates address
Must be sent using Xpresspost or Priority Courier Include in the envelope the notarised CRC and Diploma Fees needed for the process (check the consulate website) A self-addressed and pre-paid Xpresspost or Priority Courier envelope. Tip: Ring or research about sending documents to your closest Korean consulate for example only certain couriers are accepted. When the documents are verified the steps above (5 – 8) can be followed as normal. General information about visa issuance: http://can-ottawa.mofa.go.kr/englis...
