This week, I was fortunate enough to judge Nongshim's Presentation Contest which was the final stage of their English Presentation Specialist Training Program (영어PT 전문인력 양성과정).
The CEO created the term "Presentainer" (Presenter + Entertainer) to emphasize that presentations should be both engaging and entertaining so presenters were encouraged to make their presentations as memorable as possible.
In today's world of shorter and shorter attention spans, I think that idea feels more important than ever.
What made the contest especially interesting was that all ten participants were presenting the exact same set of slides introducing Nongshim.
This gave the presenters and I a chance to see how ten different presenters could uniquely present the same set of slides. I think this is an effective way for to students to reflect on what works well in a presentation.
Interestingly, it wasn't the English speakers with the most advanced vocabulary or clearest native English accents who got the highest scores, but actually it was the ones who were able to engage the audience with an exciting intro, interesting facts, jokes, engaging questions, effective body language, and memorable storytelling that brought the content to life.
Overall, each participant had their own strengths and I was genuinely impressed by their presentation skills. It was a valuable experience not only for them, but for me as well.
Thank you Nongshim and YBM for the opportunity (and also for the generous bag of snacks!)
