Title: Hope, Justice and Compassion in a Fractured World: Reviewing and Strengthening (Global) Citizenship Education
Zoom ID:944 202 6599
Audrey Osler, Professor Emerita Citizenship and Human Rights Education, University of Leeds, UK
Brief bio:
Audrey Osler is Professor Emerita at the University of Leeds, UK. Audrey has some 40 years’ experience in human rights and global citizenship education, with a particular interest in child rights, racial justice, narrative research, and education for reconciliation in conflict-ridden settings. She has acted as advisor to the Council of Europe, UNESCO and various national governments, and has taught in schools and in universities across the globe. Dr Osler has published widely, and her books translated into many languages, including Chinese, Japanese, and (from 2024) Korean. From 2010, she spent 13 years based in the Nordic region and has co-edited Nordic Perspectives on Human Rights Education (Routledge, 2024, with Beate Goldschmidt-Gjerløw). She is founding Editor-in-Chief of the scholarly journal Human Rights Education Review. She recently published Where are you from? No, where are you really from? (Virago, 2023) which draws on her family history India and South and South-East Asia and Europe, to explore what have become contentious issues relating to colonialism, migration and belonging (Virago, 2023).
Abstract of Prof. Audrey Osler’s guest lecture:
Teaching for (global) citizenship in today’s turbulent times is a particularly challenging task. Students, and indeed teachers themselves, may feel overwhelmed and dismayed by conflict and war, by the growth of anti-democratic and xenophobic movements, anxieties about violent extremism, concerns about climate change, and by populist and authoritarian politics. A common response among teachers is to avoid issues seen as controversial and to teach for greater care and compassion for those who are suffering and vulnerable to the political violence we observe around us. Yet this is unlikely to be sufficient since students also need a degree of political literacy, to understand the world in which they are living, and to work for change and ultimately for justice.
In this talk I will examine citizenship as a status, feeling and practice and then explore the cosmopolitan values emphasized by citizenship educators with an internationalist and human rights-based vision and re-assess their place in schools. I argue that we can only restore hope if we and our students have a sense of agency. I argue for a form of global citizenship education that engages both with the emotions and with the knowledge and skills needed to struggle for justice. Research suggests that we cannot effectively address the global with young people without also focussing on the local, and on the everyday realties of the students we teach. I will discuss the moral and political responsibilities of teachers and ways that schools and youth organizations can empower young citizens to believe in and struggle for a just and hopeful future.
