The Power in This Form Doesn't Come From His Arms
Watch closely and you'll notice the sequence: breath first, then a contraction and expansion through the body, then the technique. That order matters. The kinetic chain in Chil Sung Il Ro doesn't begin at the hands or even the hips — it begins in the ground.

Every stance rides on that connection to the earth. Breath initiates the contraction, the body loads through the legs and core, and the technique is simply where that stored energy finally releases. Skip the breath or skip the ground connection, and the technique is just arms and legs moving through space with no power behind it.
Whether you're just starting the Chil Sung series or you've been training it for years, this is worth watching for the breath timing alone.

Naihanji Cho Dan is performed on a single straight line. There isn't one out here.
This is the Sawtooths, and I'm not in dobok. I stopped on a ridge, found something close to level, and ran the form anyway. That's most of what I have to say about it.
Naihanji is the form we come back to when we want to know whether someone is actually rooted. There are no kicks in it. You never leave the line. Everything happens through the horse stance and the rotation of the waist, in a space barely wider than your own shoulders. When you're standing on a mat with taped lines and mirrors, the form will forgive a lot. Out here it forgives nothing, because there's no straight edge to hide behind and the ground isn't flat. You find out very quickly whether your stance is real or whether the room was doing the work for you.
That's the part I want to pass along. The dojang is where we learn the form. It isn't where the form lives.

A ki hap isn't a shout. The characters — 氣合 — mean energy, united. It's the sound of your breath and your technique arriving at the same instant, and it comes from the abdomen, not the throat.

Put your hand flat on your stomach and throw a punch. If your hand doesn't move, the sound is coming from the wrong place.
Whether you've been training three months or thirty years, this one is worth checking.

One kick, three levels of the same mechanic.
The crescent kick looks simple, and that's exactly why so many practitioners rush past it. But the spin crescent and the jump spin crescent aren't new techniques — they're the same arc with rotation and elevation layered on top. If the foundation is loose, adding a spin just makes the looseness spin with you.
Start with the basic crescent and make sure your path is clean and your base leg stays honest. Then add the turn, keeping your eyes finding the target before your leg does. Only after that do you leave the ground, and by then the jump is mostly just extra height on something you already own.
Whether you're a green belt working the first one or a Dan member sharpening the third, the sequence is the same and the order matters.

Your Kicks Are Only As Good As This Stretch Routine
Most martial artists jump straight into kicking drills cold — then wonder why their height and power aren't there. It's rarely a technique problem. It's a warm-up problem.

If Your Green Belts Are Struggling With This Form, Here's Why
Pyung Ahn E Dan is usually where instructors first see the gap between a student who memorized steps and a student who actually understands stance transitions.
Watch where the weight transfer happens between stances — that's almost always where it breaks down, and it's an easy thing to miss when you're watching a whole class instead of one student.
This is one of the clearest forms for teaching direction and timing as physical concepts, not just terminology.

Why does Jin Do make you stand on one leg before the front kick?

Most practitioners treat that stance as a balance check — hold still, don't wobble, move on. But the form is doing something more deliberate than that. It's freezing you inside the chamber position and asking whether you can actually maintain it, or whether you've just been passing through it fast enough to hide the gaps.
Watch what happens when the stance is right. The knee is high, the hip is set, the supporting leg is quiet. The front kick that follows doesn't need to be forced, because direction and distance were established before the leg ever extended.
Whether you're preparing Jin Do for a Dan test or you're years past it, this is worth revisiting. The stance will tell you the truth about your chamber every single time.

“Hand strike way.” That’s what most practitioners are taught Soo Bahk Do means. It’s only the surface of it.
Soo is the hand — but in the older seal script, that character is drawn as a whole human body: head, spine, tailbone, arms and legs. Bahk means to pound, to turn over, to cultivate: the farmer working soil, the smith folding steel. And Soo is right there on the left of it, as the hand radical — a person, changed. Do is a head moving along a road. The path, and the walking of it.
