Who was William Hamilton Shaw?

In this video, Professor Mark Peterson shares the remarkable story of the Shaw family in Korea. The story begins with missionary William Earl Shaw, who came to Korea in the early 20th century and raised his family there.

His son, William Hamilton Shaw, grew up in Korea and spoke fluent Korean. When the Korean War began in 1950, he returned as a U.S. Navy officer. During the famous Incheon landing led by General Douglas MacArthur, Shaw helped American forces by interpreting Korean and assisting with communication.

Tragically, he was killed in battle near Seoul on September 22, 1950, just days after the Incheon operation. Today, his grave at Yanghwajin Foreigner’s Cemetery stands as a symbol of the deep historical ties between Korea and those who came from abroad to serve the country.

Who was the Underwood family, and why are they important in Korean history?

In this short clip, Professor Mark Peterson shares the story of the Underwood family while visiting Yonsei University. The story begins with Horace Grant Underwood, an American missionary who arrived in Korea in 1885.

Underwood helped translate the Bible into Korean and worked to build modern schools and educational institutions. The school he founded eventually became Yonsei University, now one of Korea’s most prestigious universities.

For more than a century, several generations of the Underwood family lived and worked in Korea. Their work in education and religion left a lasting impact on Korean society.
