Back To Campus
Hi, this is me, an international student who is preparing his 8th and the last semester at Myongji University. In this article, I am going to talk about my experience at our school as pre-Covid, during Covid and specially post-Covid time. I will also mention few of my old and new made friend’s opinions.
After my freshman year at school, Covid has started so my 2nd and 3rd years of studies was through online classes. That means half of my student career at Myongji University was home based. Finally last semester things gotten better so I again had a chance to go back to our campus. And wow, things changed quite a lot! Now we have a beautiful new building, more places to enjoy, socialize, more places for shopping, exercising and so on. I almost feel bad to have for my last semester. Yes our school has gotten bigger and better but what make a campus good is the fellow students. They say best friendships start from school years. And I too, going back to classrooms after 2 years and during this time most of my friends from school already graduated, made some new friends. Even though this is my last year and so do my classmates, that means not much of a free time from studies, we still manage to catch up some time after or in between classes. Some of those people I met in fact was coming to campus for the first time. Since they started their studies, it was all online. So I was actually one of the most experienced one about our campus and its surroundings even among Korean Students. I am now looking forward to make more friends before I graduate and hopefully keep those friendships further our academic career.
I had a chance to have an interview with one of those students I mentioned above, who had her first time on campus last semester. Some of the notes from this conversation can be found below;
- Sujin Kim is in her 3rd year of studies. She and I were classmates for few classes as we have the same major.
- One thing she mentioned was that she only made three other friends other than me during all semester. As this is her first experience as taking classes at school, she felt a bit shy to start a conversation but she is actually willing to share so much once first ice is broken.
- Feeling a bit like an introvert of course started or gone worse with the time Covid time when we had to stay/study at home.
- She quoted: “Now that we have everything turned to be normal, we can proper education again(I believe face to face education is a big key of a success) as well as we can have better social life with making friends and enjoy our new campus together”.
I also had a chance meet an old friend after a long time. Nawaf from Yemen was my first friend from school. We met in orientation day, even before first semester kicked in! Yet again, during Covid time, we couldn’t meet in person until last semester. We were in our first year back then, now this is our last semester. School made us connected again, so that we had one of those long conversations we had. From studying at Myongji University so life in Seoul, family to friends and everything. Again I will mention some notes at below;
- Nawaf entering his last semester now and his grades and credits seems to be perfect. He is much better in Korean than when he started to study.
- He loves the new building and just because of that he choose one class to have a chance to experience studying there. (I already had the honor last semester )
- He is helping refugees in Korea with translating from Arabic to Korean or verse versa.
- He wants to stay in Korea after graduation and go for higher education. Preferably at Myongji University.
About myself, college life in a foreign country, with a different language and different culture/education system was such an experience so far. Having 2 years of break from going to school and going back after such a long time is also an experience. It has been a long journey so far with so many challenges but also came with so much joy. I believe and hope that hard part is over and we will enjoy rest of our studies in our beautiful campus. So much to study, so many people to meet, not much time. Alas, looking forward to all of it.
