Korea is living in 2030, but your phone is still in 2024!
Let’s be real: Landing at Incheon without the right apps is like trying to play a video game without a controller.
🎮 Google Maps will lead you into a wall, and waving at a taxi? Good luck with that🚕🚫
South Korea is a “Digital Island.” Global giants often take a backseat to local powerhouses that make life 10x smoother.
If you want to eat at the viral spots, get home safely after midnight, and actually understand what’s written on that menu, you need the YFIK 2026 Survival Kit.

POV: You moved to Korea for a 6-month exchange... and never left 🇰🇷🏠
I didn't come to Korea with a master plan. I didn't even have a 'this is my destiny' feeling.
I arrived as an exchange student from the Netherlands, just trying to figure out the language and the food. Back then, Korea wasn’t even my first choice.
But that’s the thing about relocating—it’s humbling and exhausting. I had to learn the rhythm of a new culture, survive the 'administrative headaches,' and push through the awkwardness of making friends.
Time will tell, but I’m telling you first: Korea is not a permanent highlight reel. It is a real place with real challenges. But if you stop expecting perfection and start putting in the effort, it becomes something better. It becomes home.
What started as one semester for my education turned into my entire life, my career, and my family.
Thinking of making the move? Let your Seonbaenim give you the real scoop first 🇰🇷

YFIK Features Mark Balneger’s story, a Dutch national who went to Korea for an exchange student program but ended up staying!

🇰🇷 Mark Balneger:
You can read every blog. Watch every YouTube vlog. Save every TikTok. Make the perfect checklist. But no matter how much research you do, there are always things nobody really tells you until you are already there, figuring it out in real time.
So, here it is. Not theory. Not fantasy. Just the kind of stuff I genuinely wish I knew earlier.
1. Korea can become home, but it might not feel like home right away—[but] none of that means you made the wrong choice. It just means you are adjusting.
2. Korea in real life is not Korea in content—If you come expecting a real life experience, with great parts and difficult parts, you will adapt much better.
3. You do not need fluent Korean on day one, but you do need effort. Learn the basics before you arrive. That alone can reduce a lot of stress.
4. Korean culture is warm, but not always obvious. Korean kindness does not always look the way foreign students expect it to. But over time, you start to understand the rhythm of it.
5. Making friends takes more intention than people admit: One of the best things you can do is stop waiting for a perfect social moment. You need to give people a chance to know you.
6. There will be practical stuff nobody warns you about enough: Relocating is not only emotional. It is administrative. Sometimes, one honest tip from someone who has already been through it is more useful than ten official pages of general information.
7. You might come for school, but leave with something much bigger. I first came to Korea as a student. Then, I ended up building a career here. I built a life here. Now, Korea is not just “that country I studied in.” It became home.
So, what do I wish I knew?
Time will tell, yes.
But hearing the truth from someone who has already walked the road can make that time a little easier, a little less confusing, and a lot less lonely.
