Hunminjeongeum, meaning 'the proper sounds for the instruction of the people,' is Korea's alphabet system promulgated by King Sejong, the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty. He took pity on the fact that hanja, Chinese letters formerly used in Korea, was difficult for commoners to learn and use, and in 1443, the 25th year of his reign, completed an alphabet system fit for scribing the Korean language and named it Hunminjeongeum. In 1446 (Sejong year 28), scholars of the Jiphyeonjeon, Hall of Worthies, added commentaries, named it Hunminjeongeum Haerye, and published the book containing 33 pages.
Hanja was a letter system for Chinese people and thus differed from Korean language completely from its structure. According to Haerye, the scholars of the Jiphyeonjeon described this difference as "to write Korean in Hanja is absurd as pushing a square handle into a round hole forcedly." To solve this problem, King Sejong clarified the objective of creation at the preface, made examples using the new letters, and created 28 alphabets made of simple strokes for commoners to learn and used easily.
The first part of Hunminjeongeum is a preface on the objective of creation, examples and descriptions of 28 new alphabet divided into 11 initiative sounds, and example sentences showing how to scribe the Korean language by combining them. Part two is divided into six chapters of comments written by
scholars on the main content; jejahye the description of the principle of its creation, chosunghye on the 17 consonants marking the initial sound of a syllable, jongsunghye on the 11 vowels, jongsunghye on the final sound of a syllable, hapjahye on how to combine initial, medial, and final sounds to mark a syllable, and yongjarye showing examples of new letters forming words. At the end is the preface of Hunminjeongeum Haerye by Jeong Inji. Hunminjeongeum follows the traditional bookbinding method in 5 holes, 20cm x 32.3cm in its size. The letters were cared delicately onto woodblocks and then printed on high-quality paper and ink which shows the excellency of the Joseon Dynasty's publication culture in 15th century.
Many ethnic groups have tried to make their own unique alphabet for their language, but Hunminjeongeum is the only case which was free from the influence of pre-existing character and used as a nation's public alphabet. Its publication with a detailed commentary on the use of the new alphabet is also unique. The making principle and its theory written in the Haerye was an innovative theory at that time which many linguists value its superiority highly.
Hunminjeongeum was designated as the 70th national treasure in 1962 and was registered as UNESCO's Memory of the World in 1997. Moreover, UNESCO is currently awarding UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize on every 8th September to an individual or an organization that contributes to fighting illiteracy to activate the International Literacy Movement. As can be seen from the name 'King Sejong Literacy Price,' letters should be easy enough for anyone to learn, and Hangul is valued worldwide in this sense.
