1985년 6월 1일 경남혜림학교로부터 분리하여 청각장애학생을 가르치는 경남천광학교로 문을 열었다. 1993년 3월 1일 지체부자유과정을 신설하였으며 2008년 3월 1일부터 유치원, 초등학교, 중학교, 고등학교 과정 35학급을 편성 운영하였다. 학교에 올 수 없는 중증장애인이나 정규 과정의 교육을 받지 못한 이를 대상으로 순회교육도 실시하고 있다. 2009년 3월 1일 창원천광학교로 명칭을 변경하였다.
