Martial law (계엄, Gyeom) in South Korea is a measure under which the military temporarily takes control of the country’s administration in times of extreme crisis, such as war, rebellion, or severe instability. It is enacted under the Constitution of South Korea and the Martial Law Act. During martial law:
1. Civil Liberties Are Suspended: Freedom of speech, assembly, and press can be heavily restricted.
2. Civilian Authority is Replaced by Military Control: The military oversees law enforcement and administration.
3. Curfews and Travel Restrictions: Movement can be restricted, and curfews may be imposed.
4. Courts and Justice: Civil courts may be replaced by military.

Impact on International Students

Martial law has been declared today, it could potentially affect international students in several ways:
• Restricted Mobility: Students might face difficulties traveling or attending classes due to curfews or transport limitations.
• Increased Surveillance: International students may be subject to heightened scrutiny.
• Temporary Closure of Universities: Educational institutions might shut down temporarily, disrupting academic schedules.
• Potential Safety Concerns: Foreign nationals might be advised to follow embassy directives and avoid involvement in local political situations.

While martial law is unlikely in South Korea’s current democratic framework, any such declaration would impact everyone within the country’s borders, including international students. It is always advisable to stay informed and follow guidance from your university and embassy during times of political unrest.
