HELP US COMPLETE THE ACCESSIBLE BATHROOM AT ACCESSIBLE EDEN FARMSTEAD

Accessible Eden Farmstead provides persons with disabilities with hands-on training in climate-smart agriculture, food production and livelihood skills.

Although the farm is already active, the training building still requires plastering, tiling, electrical work, doors, windows and painting. Our first priority is to complete the accessible bathroom. Having a functional bathroom will allow more persons with disabilities to attend activities safely and comfortably—and remain at the farm for longer periods.

We are seeking donations of:

• Cement
• Floor and wall tiles
• Tile grout
• Six windows
• Three doors—one entry door and two interior doors
• Interior and exterior paint
• Skilled labour for plastering, tiling, electrical work and painting

We are grateful to the persons who have already volunteered their time. One supporter has also pledged five bags of cement. This is a good start, but we still need the support of individuals, businesses, contractors and suppliers to complete the work.

Building more inclusive first contacts at our ports

The St. Kitts-Nevis Association of Persons with Disabilities (SKNAPD) was pleased to work alongside JBE Accessibility Solutions Consulting, in collaboration with the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, to deliver “First Contact Matters: Disability Etiquette and Accessible Passenger Assistance” for employees of the St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA).

Across three practical training sessions, approximately 60 security, screening, front-desk and other first-contact personnel explored how they can provide safer, more respectful and more accessible assistance to passengers with disabilities.

The participants were highly engaged throughout the sessions. They asked questions, shared experiences from their work and participated in demonstrations covering:

• Respectful wheelchair assistance
• Guiding passengers who are blind or have low vision
• Communicating with deaf and hard-of-hearing passengers
• Asking before assisting
• Protecting privacy and personal dignity
• Supporting passengers during security checks, boarding, delays and emergencies

A particularly valuable part of the training focused on guiding a person who is blind. Some participants initially relied on what they believed was the correct approach. After receiving practical guidance and demonstrations by Mr. Lorenzo Jackson (Vice President SKNAPD), they quickly learned how to offer an elbow, walk alongside the person, communicate clearly and provide useful information about the surroundings.

The preliminary feedback was very encouraging:
• 95% strongly agreed that they better understood disability inclusion.
• 95% strongly agreed that they could communicate more respectfully with persons with disabilities.
• 99% strongly agreed that they could better identify barriers in their work areas.
• 97% strongly agreed that the activities were practical.

The message throughout the training was clear:

Ask before assisting. Listen to the person. Act safely and respectfully. Confirm that the support is working.

Persons with disabilities are entitled to travel and receive services with the same dignity, safety, independence and respect as every other passenger.

SKNAPD thanks SCASPA, the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, JBE Accessibility Solutions Consulting and all the participants for supporting this important step towards more accessible and welcoming air and seaports in St. Kitts and Nevis.
