As we come to the end of our celebrations for this year’s “International Day of Persons with Disabilities” I would like to leave the nation with these words! As a nation our young people are the future and this includes all young people.

We celebrated this year under the theme: Empowering Youths with Disabilities – Advancing Inclusion Through Action.

Every young person in St. Kitts and Nevis deserves the chance to dream, to grow, and to achieve their fullest potential. For youths with disabilities, this is not just a matter of opportunity—it is a matter of equity, dignity, and national development.

Empowering youths with disabilities is more than a goal—it is a responsibility. Across St. Kitts and Nevis, young people with disabilities possess talent, intelligence, and creativity that our nation cannot afford to overlook. When we invest in their development, we strengthen our communities, expand our workforce, and build a more inclusive future for all. When we ensure they have access to training, education, employment pathways, accessible environments, and supportive networks, we are investing in the future of our nation.

Advancing inclusion requires action. It means partnering with families, schools, employers, and government agencies to break down barriers—physical, social, and attitudinal. It means ensuring assistive devices, accessible transportation, inclusive programs, and meaningful participation in community life. Most importantly, it means elevating the voices of youths with disabilities and ensuring they help design the solutions that affect their lives.

Why it matters:

Youth with disabilities deserve the same opportunities as every other young person—to learn, to work, to participate, and to lead. When they face barriers such as inaccessible buildings, limited training options, or negative attitudes, we all lose out on their potential. Inclusion ensures that every voice is heard and every dream is given space to grow.

How we advance inclusion:

By creating accessible training programs, supporting skills development, opening doors to employment, and ensuring representation in decision-making spaces. Inclusion becomes real when communities, government, families, and organizations like the St. Kitts Nevis Association of Persons with Disabilities (SKNAPD) work together to remove barriers and champion equal opportunity. When we take action—big or small—we show our youths that they are valued, respected, and capable of achieving greatness.

Young people with disabilities in St. Kitts & Nevis must be given every opportunity to reach their full potential. Their success strengthens our nation. Their voices shape our progress. Their dreams deserve our full support. Their potential is vast. Their contributions are valuable. And their empowerment strengthens the Federation as a whole.

Let us continue to champion accessibility, celebrate achievements, and push for systems that recognize ability before disability. Because when our youth thrive, our communities thrive. When we act together, inclusion becomes more than an aspiration—it becomes our shared reality.

Empowering youths with disabilities means taking action today—because inclusion is not just a principle, it is a promise. Empowerment is not optional. Inclusion is not negotiable. Action is required.
