Our Day, Your Day, Day for #WomenInMaritime
Resilience and Leadership amidst a global pandemic

[04/05/21]   A message from MTC Captain Superintendent, Cristian Mita

Dear all seafarers who have returned home!
I would like to address you a few words for your perusal and to make an appeal to your understanding.
I noted with concern your claims and complaints.
I understand them all. I myself was having a long trip onboard a ship and it was lasting for more than 14 months. Same as you, I didn’t have the chance to see my kids and my beloved ones.
I understand them all because I didn't reach my home either for almost 19 months.
I was with you onboard ships for almost 5 years, and I consider this as an honor. For me, you are the best crew which I ever had a chance to meet and work hard (as you know it well) on board.
This is the reason for applying for this job, here, at MTC, in Tarawa/Kiribati.
Please take into consideration that we, MTC, were ceasing the training, same for the I-Kiribati future seafarers. Our present trainees embraced the fact that they will extend their time with one more month, just to make sure that you return as quickly as possible at home.
I acknowledge again your complaints, but having in view the short notice and huge amount of work to be done, for MTC to be a quarantine station, this was the best to be accomplished.
Remember that once, many years ago, some of you were sleeping in the same dormitories as you are sleeping now.
Please, just think that you are home now, at last. Few more days left to pass all the inconveniences, and you will be again with your beloved ones, kids (maybe never seen), and wives.
Again, this is a humble appeal to you to remain strong as always, don’t let a few more side waves upset you.
Please, just think that this Center was built with your sweat and is designed to last. Same for you, for further courses and same, for training the new further generations, which they want to become seafarers.
Let the further seafarers undergoing training, to have the same resources as they had until to now.
I have all confidence in you that you’ll not let down MTC, its future and the new seafarers, which one day, who knows, can be your own kids.

Please, be as strong as you can be, and I know that you are, few more days left, which are nothing compared with the long months away from home.

Please let me know if you need something, if it stays in my power, I'll do it immediately.

Relying on your judgment, all my best wishes and regards to you.
God bless us all in these world wide distressed times.

International Day of the Seafarer 25 June 2020 #SeafarersAreKeyWorkers

Let us celebrate the hard work Seafarers have done over decades of years. Not only that their families are proud of them, Kiribati as a country and a nation is also proud of all hardworking and dedicated seafarer.

Our biggest appreciation to our donor NEW ZEALAND GOVT through MFAT for the continuing endless support of funding to the schools. You are far too kind.👏⚓️⛴🛳

International Day of the Seafarer 25 June 2020 #SeafarersAreKeyWorkers

The annual International Day of the Seafarer celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year! 🛳🚢

Seafarers are on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic, playing an important role in maintaining the flow of vital goods. We give thanks to seafarers who work hard to ensure this continues despite the uncertainties they face while at sea and wherever they travel. In the current COVID-19 climate, many seafarers remain unable to travel to continue work or remain stranded abroad far away from their families, either while in transit or while working on their ships, due to closed borders.

🇳🇿New Zealand, in collaboration with the 🇰🇮Government of Kiribati, has supported Kiribati’s Marine Training Centre (MTC) for almost forty years. The MTC provides skill development and international qualifications for individuals, many of whom graduate to work as seafarers for international employment. These I-Kiribati seafarers have good reputations in the shipping industry and provide valuable remittances contributing to a prosperous Kiribati. New Zealand is proud to have supported the MTC with improved infrastructure, technical equipment (such as the bridge simulator pictured below), and the continued improvement of key courses and roll out of new courses including the office level Master Class 4 course.

Thank you and Tekeraoi to all the hard-working seafarers on their special day!

Christmas Cantata for Marine Engineers

This is music to our ears! Enjoy the amazing sound of a 75-year-old naturally aspirated four-stroke diesel engine with 4 cylinders. During the Battle of Tarawa the engine generated power for the Japanese command bunker in Betio, today it is used at MTC to train future seafarers in basic engine operations.

12/12/2018

We would like to thank all of you for the successful cooperation throughout the year and we are looking forward to further cooperation in 2019!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Kiribati is celebrating Independence and is marching in step. Thursday, 12 July was a lovely sunny day, perfect for a large parade. The MTC platoon led the groups passing by the tribunes, while MTC catering students served food and drinks.

10/07/2018

Great fun! The vaka motu "Okeanos Marshall Islands" is visiting Kiribati for the independence celebration and took MTC students for a nice cruise. The vaka motu combines traditional design and modern technology. It can be sailed or it uses its diesel engine as propulsion - powered by coconut oil! Thus the vaka motu is an interesting example for sustainable inter-island low-carbon sea transport. The students enjoyed the cruise and took the helm!

Welcome 100 IDF course! One year after MTC's Golden Jubilee, the 100th IDF course has started. More than 5000 seafarers have been trained at MTC over the last 50 years. The impressive figures show the strong demand for Kiribati seafarers.

Nakoia te roro-n-rikirake:

There are plenty of jobs overseas! Study hard at school, learn English and join MTC! See you soon - at the 101 IDF, 48 FVP or 98 BSHC course!
