Bus Coupler

A Bus coupler (or bus-coupler circuit breaker) in an electrical substation is used to connect or separate two sections of a busbar.

Bus Coupler

Normally, the bus coupler may be open or closed, depending on the operating philosophy.

When open, each bus section can operate independently from its own incomer. When closed, the two bus sections are electrically connected, allowing one source to support both sections if the system design and protection settings permit it.

♓ Why a bus coupler is used

🔸 Reliability: If one incomer or transformer is unavailable, loads may be transferred to the healthy section.

🔸Maintenance: One bus section can be isolated while the other remains energized.

🔸Load transfer: Loads can be shifted between transformers/incomers.

🔸Fault isolation: A faulted bus section can be separated from the healthy section.

🔸Operational flexibility: Operators can change the substation configuration without shutting down the entire bus.

🔸A common protection/interlocking rule is to prevent unintended paralleling of two transformers or sources through the bus coupler. Depending on the design, closing the coupler may require opening one incomer first, or checking synchronization and other conditions.
