ources are limited. In Australia schools are well resourced and regularly update programs. Teachers and students want a constructive use for used books and also want to help others. Their response to donating to Book Buddies has been very positive. Mr Ven Socheat is a man who has studied and worked in Siem Reap. He has a history of being a competent and popular student leader and community worker. He has a genuine ambition to help his country progress. Education ultimately benefits the welfare of the people. Socheat receives a monthly salary for co-ordinating the work of Book Buddies. He contacts learning centres and pledges the books they require. He then delivers them and also presents lessons which reinforce the care of books and the benefits of education. Judie MacMillan is an experienced teacher in Australia. She has found that students want to make a connection with and help other children. She has received hundreds of books, which have been successfully sent by post to Cambodia. EVALUATION:
In July 2014, Judie and Socheat completed a ‘one year’ evaluation. It was obvious that the project was very beneficial and successful. The major concern is the huge expense of postage. Many companies have been contacted for support, but nothing has yet eventuated. So, it is most important that fund-raising ideas are pursued to ensure the continuation of this valuable program.
