ISSR Community Activities Before the Christmas Break

On 19 December 2025, students and staff at the International School of Siem Reap (ISSR) took part in a meaningful community outreach programme on the final day before the Christmas break. The school community visited a local site to personally distribute donations of essential supplies and snacks to displaced persons. Following the visit, the entire school gathered for a solemn minute’s silence to pay their respects and express their deepest condolences to all those affected by the conflict.

This morning the year 10 Travel and Tourism class went on a field trip in order to develop a deeper and more authentic understanding of what is meant when we talk about sustainable and responsible tourism. They spent the morning at the Friends International Child Safe Cambodia Hub (https://thinkchildsafe.org/) where they experienced a combined workshop learning how to make mock tails, interspersed with a detailed discussion and explanation about the 7 Tips for Travellers.

This Child Safe initiative is specially designed to teach tourists about 7 better ways to contribute to child protect while they are travelling in Cambodia. For example, the students learned that children are not tourist attractions; and that caring for the environment ensures a greater future wellbeing for all children. While many tourists arrive with good intentions, they do not always understand the importance of working with local community and legislation.
4 mocktails later, the mocktail making competition was filled with excitement and tension. Every team pulled together, resulting in barely a second between first and second place. ISSR students once again demonstrated their capacity to have a great learning experience and support each other.

The group then headed off the Friends International Restaurant, Marum. Here they were able to browse products available in the Fair Trade shop and see first-hand the environment where vulnerable young people learn hospitality and cooking skills and begin their new life as empowered Cambodian citizens. Best of all was the phenomenal lunch the Marum graduates prepared: three delicious dishes, fresh local fruit and rice.

The outing was a great experience and everyone completed the second part of their semester two project over the morning.
