Building Strong Foundations: Numbers Come to Life! ๐ขโจ
Through Maths Teacher Mentoring, young learners are discovering the joy of numbers through engaging, hands-on Khmer numeracy lessons. From counting with everyday objects to recognising and writing Khmer numbers, students are building confidence one number at a time.
Recently, early grade classrooms at a school in Banan District embraced fun, interactive activities centred on foundational numeracy โ part of the broader effort to strengthen literacy and numeracy skills for early grade learners.
After attending TEP workshops, teachers created a lively, supportive space where children could practise, ask questions and celebrate small wins together, reinforcing the idea that a strong grasp of numbers early on opens the door to a lifetime of learning.
These moments of joyful learning are made possible through the Transform Education Program in Siem Reap and Battambang Provinces, supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP), Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
Over the last two weeks we have been joined in Cambodia by sixteen teachers and school leaders from across Ireland. They have spent the time learning about the education system, collaborating with our Cambodia staff, delivering professional development on topics including; literacy, school leadership, and communities of practice, and engaging with primary school teachers and school leaders in Siem Reap Province. In addition, they all participated in the EPIC Summit 2026.
Watch this video to learn more about the Connect Experience. Thanks so much to Maeve, Carmel, Una, Emmagene, Laura, Michele, Elva, Gwen, Dearbhaile, Louise, Martina, Meabh, Laura, Jane, Pauline and Colette for your really significant contribution. We hope this is the beginning and not the end of the journey.
Thanks also to our partners at the Irish national Teachersโ Organisation and the Retired Teachersโ Association of Ireland who both provide funding to support our work in Cambodian primary schools.
