Bakong is an early Khmer temple located in the Roluos Group near Siem Reap, Cambodia. Dedicated in 881 CE by King Indravarman I, it functioned as a royal state temple and centre of religious activity.

The temple represents one of the earliest large sandstone structures in the Khmer world, marking a transition from brick to durable stone construction. Its stepped pyramid design symbolises Mount Meru, the sacred mountain of Hindu cosmology, and is surrounded by a moat representing the cosmic ocean.

The central sanctuary at the summit once housed images of the deity Shiva, while surrounding enclosures and laterite walls structured the temple complex, reflecting careful planning and an evolving architectural style that influenced later Khmer monuments, including those at Angkor...
