Patient Come to your clinic complains about a very painful tooth in his/her mouth. after a comprehensive history taking, clinical examination, X-ray and several special test have been conducted. you found that the patient have acute pulp inflammation. you gave an LA, you placed rubber dam nicely, but when you start access the cavity the patient still feel the pain and it hurt really bad. that is frustrated to all dentist. well.... it's not your fault entirely. Scaling and prophylaxis seem like an easy procedure and often time most clinic let their dental assistants do the works. But the purpose of this procedure is not just remove calculus but also produce surface smoothness so the calculus not reformed soon after scaling and root planing. This study have shown that ultrasonic scaler will not produce surface smoothness compare to hand instrument. So what you can do is start with ultrasonic scaler remove as much calculus as possible and finish with hand instrument and prophylaxis. This methods is also ISO.
