Today we mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action β a moment to remember that the impact of war does not end when the fighting stops.
Landmines and explosive remnants of war remain hidden in fields, villages and roads long after conflicts end. For many communities, everyday activities like farming, walking to school, or collecting water can become life-threatening.
In 2024, 6,279 people were killed or injured by landmines and explosive remnants of war, and 90% of victims were civilians. Nearly half were children.
These numbers remind us that explosive hazards continue to affect families, communities and entire generations.
Preventing the use of these weapons, clearing contaminated land, and supporting affected communities are essential steps to protect civilians and build a safer future.

Children are among the most vulnerable victims of landmines and explosive remnants of war.
In 2024, nearly half of civilian casualties were children (46%).
Curiosity, unfamiliar objects, and daily routinesβwalking to school, playing outside, collecting waterβplace them at risk.
Explosive hazards can cause devastating injuries, long-term disabilities, and psychological trauma that affects a childβs entire future.
Protecting children means preventing the use of these weapons and clearing contaminated land.
