𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The long-lasting Covid-pandemic situation challenges us to rethink the whole political and economic system of the world. Are we OK with the globalized structure of social injustice and ecological crisis? If not, how could we rebuild the world system better, which could prevent a future catastrophe much stronger than the present Covid-19 pandemic? These questions demand profound critical and creative thinking, or a “world view,” developed by the integral knowledge of science, psychology, sociology, economics, and religious studies. Philosophy education aims to promote such integral knowledge. Students in philosophy are expected to be a leader of each section of the society: professor, researcher, teacher, manager, coordinator, organizer, officer, social worker, or a political leader. At this webinar, Dr. Ingun Kang will talk about the goal of philosophy education, presenting four essential skills and virtues that all students have to develop through philosophical learning.

𝗗𝗿. 𝗜𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗴 is a Korean Jesuit priest who has been working in Cambodia since 1997. At present, He is the director of MAGGA Jesuit Research Center in Phnom Penh. He is also a professor of the Philosophy Department of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, the St. John Vianney Seminary in Phnom Penh, and the Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University in Battambang. Dr. Kang has been promoting interreligious dialogue for justice and peace through seminars and lectures in different countries, such as U.S.A., Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka. In Cambodia, he also strives to help higher education through lectures, scholarship programs, and publications.

𝗗𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮: 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹!

This talk will focus on the tireless efforts of a Cambodian Buddhist monk named Venerable Maha Ghosananda, who devoted his life from 1979 to the practice of non-violence in war-torn Cambodia, seeking forgiveness and peace & reconciliation, both individual and national.

Maha Ghosananda founded a peace movement known as the “Dhammayietra" (literally, “Dharma pilgrimage”), where he led annual peace walks across the country to end the civil war and heal the traumatization of the country. More than a quarter of Cambodia’s population perished during the genocidal period of the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975-1979. Maha Ghosananda was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize four times by Nobel laureates in the 1990s.

𝗩𝗲𝗻. 𝗗𝗿. 𝗬𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 joined the first Dhammayietra in 1992, when Cambodian monks, nuns, and laypeople walked nearly 500 kilometers from the refugee camps in Thailand to the capital of Phnom Penh. He is currently serving as a Vice-Rector of Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University based in Phnom Penh.

This Video is the record of the Presentation given by Ven. Dr. Yon Seng Yeath in Philosophy Webinar on May 5, 2021, which has been hosted by M.A. In Philosophy Program.
