Royal Enclosure & PHIMEAN AKAS( Form risk of my proposal in 05 may 2011)
The enclosure has five sanctuary Gopuras which were built by King Suryavaman I reign. Why, was King ‘s Palace called Phimean Akas? Because it is symbolized of sky palace it mean, all the king had promoted themselves to the god king. As you see middle wall of elephant terrace , was decorated by Garudas symbolizing the celestial palace.
King palace was surrounded by Laterite wall with 300m-600m, and 5m of high.
There are five gates, the east one is principal, four other are common gates. Inside the Royal enclosure, there is not anything, except two pools at northward until you reach the pond area. The first pond called Shrah Srei or women’s bath (30mx50m) at the east side and surround by tiers of step made of sandstone. But it is the second that is noteworthy, know as the Srah Bros or man bath (125mx45m) at the west side and is bordered by terrace wall with relief caving of garudas, nagas, fish and other aquatic animals which, in the southwest corner, are in an excellent state of preservation.
Phimean Akas is located in royal complex, where the king worshipped; it must originally have been crowned with a golden pinnacle as Zhou Daguan described it as the ‘’tower of gold ‘’it was built in the reign of king Rajendravarman II, Jayavarman V and Suryavarman I, dedicated to Siva. Now we can be seen the central sanctuary stands on a base with three Laterite tiers and is a approached by four step stair ways one on each side.
Around there, we can standing on each corner and the Lion stand an three tiered Laterite of each step any ways, we can see the small gallery stand on the third level.
This temple is associated with a legend (Zhou Daguan’s report that tells of a gold tower Phimean Akas) in side royal palace, where a spirit serpent with nine heads lived. The spirit appeared to the king disguised as a beautiful woman and the king had to sleep with her every night in the tower before he joined wises concubines in another part of palace. If the king missed even one night it was believed that he will die. In this way the royal lineage was perpetuated.
