Pelvic placement is one of the most important foundations of Pilates.
In STOTT Pilates we distinguish between neutral pelvis and imprint.
Neutral pelvis maintains the natural lumbar curve and allows the spine to move efficiently, while imprint can provide additional support during certain exercises.
Understanding when to use each position helps build safe, effective, and controlled movement.
This is Principle 2 of the STOTT Pilates Basic Principles series.

Looks cool, right?
But Pilates is not about doing impressive exercises for social media.
Movements like this require years of training, strength, precision, and deep body awareness. They should never be rushed or performed without a strong foundation.
At The Pilates Lab, our focus is always on learning and mastering the basics first — breathing, alignment, control, and stability.
Only when those foundations are solid can you safely progress into more advanced work.
Because Pilates is about long-term strength and intelligent movement, not just a cool picture.

Hi everyone! Just a little reminder from us 💛
Our group classes are designed to be fun, dynamic, and energising for all levels. During these sessions, we do our best to give clear cues, correct form, and keep everyone moving safely, but because it’s a group setting, we can’t always monitor every single rep or engagement for each person.
If you ever have any discomfort, questions about technique, old injuries, or simply feel unsure during an exercise, please let your instructor know before class or ask for a quick check during class. We’re always happy to offer modifications or alternatives so you can move with confidence.
Pilates is all about control and intentional movement. When engagement isn’t quite right, exercises may feel uncomfortable or less effective, which is completely normal when you’re still learning the technique. If you feel you haven’t found the right engagement yet or would like more guidance, a little extra personalised attention can make a big difference.
For anyone wanting deeper support or help refining form and technique, our private sessions are the perfect space to work 1-on-1 at your own pace.
Thank you for your support.
We love moving with you! 🧡✨

💨 Breath = Core Connection 💨
In Pilates, your breath isn’t just about oxygen—it’s how we connect to the deep abdominals and support the spine.
In STOTT PILATES®, we use lateral thoracic breathing:
➡️ Inhale wide into the sides and back of your rib cage.
➡️ Exhale to feel the deep abs draw in and stabilize.
This type of breathing:
✨ Keeps tension out of the neck and shoulders
✨ Engages your powerhouse more effectively
✨ Helps you move with flow and control
So next time you’re on the Reformer or mat—let your breath lead the way. Each inhale prepares, each exhale powers the movement.

✨ Your core is more than abs—it’s your powerhouse. ✨
In STOTT PILATES®, the powerhouse refers to the deep stabilizing muscles—abdominals, back extensors, pelvic floor, and hips—that support every movement.
That’s why the Basic Principles always come back to the core:
1️⃣ Breathing – using your breath to activate deep abdominals.
2️⃣ Pelvic placement – finding neutral or imprint to support your spine.
3️⃣ Rib cage placement – keeping ribs connected so your core stays engaged.
4️⃣ Scapular movement & stabilization – strong shoulder blades = strong upper body.
5️⃣ Head & cervical alignment – balancing the head keeps your whole spine safe.
When all five come together, your core isn’t just working—it’s powering every move with strength and control. 💪
👉 Next time you’re in class, notice how each principle connects back to your powerhouse. That’s where the magic of Pilates begins.
