The English Language-Based Master of Law (ELBML) Program at the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE), in collaboration with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) and the University of South-East Asia (USEA), is pleased to organize a workshop on “Advancing Responsible Business Conduct Through Case-Based Learning: From Development to Classroom Practice.”

The workshop forms part of a broader RBC case-study initiative jointly developed by ELBML, RWI, and CamEd Business School to strengthen practice-oriented legal and business education in Cambodia through locally grounded, interdisciplinary, and case-based learning approaches.

The session will share experiences and lessons learned from the development, piloting, and classroom integration of the Amru Rice and Biofuel case studies, including how these teaching materials have been incorporated into courses on Business and Human Rights (BHR), ESG, corporate governance and compliance, and environmental law and compliance at ELBML and partner universities in Phnom Penh.

Importantly, the workshop will also feature presentations by ELBML students, who will present their own RBC-related case studies developed through the BHR course. Their work reflects how case-based learning can help students move beyond theory to critically analyse real-world governance, sustainability, and human-rights-related business challenges in Cambodia while strengthening research, analytical, and practical problem-solving skills.

Prior to the workshop, ELBML students and faculty members will undertake a field study visit to Amru Rice’s Kampong Thom branch. The visit aims to provide students with firsthand exposure to ESG governance, contract farming practices, sustainability compliance, and responsible business conduct in Cambodia’s agribusiness sector. By linking classroom learning with direct industry engagement, the field study is designed to deepen students’ understanding of both the opportunities and practical challenges surrounding RBC implementation, sustainability governance, and international compliance expectations in real business settings.

Through faculty exchange, student engagement, field-based learning, and practical discussion, the workshop aims to contribute to the growing use of interdisciplinary and case-based teaching approaches in Cambodian higher education while fostering stronger connections between legal education, business practice, and sustainability governance.

In line with the ongoing collaboration between the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE) and UNIDROIT, with the English Language-Based Master of Law (ELBML) Programme and the UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC) serving as the implementing organs, Dr Socheata Sao, Deputy Director of the ELBML Programme, recently completed a short research visit at UNIDROIT Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

During the visit, Dr Sao conducted research and presented her preliminary findings on “Contract Farming Governance in Cambodia: Legal Gaps, Contractual Practice, and Insights from the UNIDROIT/FAO/IFAD Legal Guide on Contract Farming.” The presentation explored emerging issues relating to governance, legal frameworks, sustainability, and responsible business practices in agricultural value chains in Cambodia.

The research builds on Dr Sao’s broader work in business and human rights, responsible business conduct (RBC), ESG, and agribusiness governance, including the development of the Amru Rice case study previously piloted within ELBML and partner institutions.

The visit also provided valuable opportunities for academic exchange and discussions on future collaboration between RULE/ELBML, UNIDROIT/ATLC, and international academic partners. Under the RULE–UNIDROIT collaboration framework, the ELBML Programme strongly encourages faculty members and students to explore relevant research, internship, scholarship, and academic exchange opportunities with UNIDROIT, where available.

ELBML remains committed to strengthening international engagement, research collaboration, and practice-oriented legal education in Cambodia.

We are pleased to share that, on 22 April 2026, the English Language-Based Bachelor of Law (ELBBL) and Master of Law (ELBML) Programs at the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Labour of the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MLVT).

This partnership represents an important step in strengthening the link between advanced legal education and institutional practice. It provides ELBML students with valuable opportunities to engage directly with Cambodia’s labor law and policy frameworks through specialized training and structured internships.

Through this collaboration, students will gain practical insight into employment law, social security systems, and vocational training policies—enhancing their ability to connect legal theory with real-world application. These experiences will further develop their analytical and professional competencies and better prepare them for roles in legal practice, public institutions, and policy-related fields.

The MoU reflects a shared commitment to advancing practice-oriented legal education, strengthening human capital, and aligning postgraduate training with evolving labor market needs. 😊

We were honored to meet with Mr. Song Saran, CEO and President of Amru Rice (Cambodia), on April 09, to discuss the development of a teaching case study on Amru Rice.

This case study is led by Dr. Socheata Sao (lead author), Law Lecturer and Deputy Director of the English Language-Based Master of Law (ELBML) Program. It reflects ELBML’s commitment to advancing high-quality, practice-oriented teaching through the case method.

Conceptualized, developed, and piloted within ELBML courses, the case integrates legal analysis with business and ESG perspectives, enabling students to engage with real-world opportunities and challenges in Cambodia’s agricultural value chains. It has been used in teaching business and human rights and corporate governance, strengthening students’ analytical and applied learning skills. The case has also been piloted at CamEd Business School by Dr. Kenneth Paul Charman (co-author), as well as at the National University of Management (NUM) and the American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP).

Beyond classroom use, the case forms part of a broader collaborative project supported by the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI). It is currently being further refined under Dr. Socheata Sao’s direction, with plans for wider dissemination and publication for teaching use across Cambodia, Asia, and internationally.

Also present at the meeting were Dr. Kenneth Paul Charman (CamEd Business School) and Mr. Mostafa Sen, Country Director of RWI in Cambodia.

This initiative highlights ELBML’s role in developing locally grounded, globally relevant teaching materials and strengthening the use of case-based learning in legal and business education. 😊
