‘The Art and the Science’ is the theme of the biannual ISPO International (International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics) World Congress, taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico from 24-27 April 2023.

This unique, four-day event brings together key actors in the Prosthetics and Orthotics world – clinicians, educators, technicians, engineers, researchers, businesses, students and public sector bodies – and representatives of the wider physical rehabilitation sector.

Exceed Worldwide representatives include David Boone, Chair Board of Trustees, CEO Carson Harte and Cambodia Country Director, Sisary Kheng. The Exceed Research Network (ERN), represented by members from academic institutions, NGOs and businesses, also has a significant presence and ERN members are contributing to the event programme.

This programme focuses on the latest scientific and clinical advances, products, innovative technologies, designs, and materials in prosthetic and orthotic care and involves keynote lectures, symposia, instructional courses, paper and poster presentations and practical workshops.

Thanks for reading about Exceed in Cambodia and supporting our appeal.

We’re finishing off today with two messages

- 90% of those who need Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) services in Cambodia have no access to services.

- A donation to P&O is an investment – research indicates that every $1 invested in assistive technology generates $9 in return.
So, help us to keep our free services going. People in Cambodia need them.

Part of the Community

Today, we look at the work of our community support teams.

In Cambodia having a disability means it’s hard to attend and stay-in education – only 51% of people with disabilities aged 15-29 age have attended school, compared to 94% of non-disabled people in the same age range. This pattern is repeated in all areas of education – for example, only 1% of people with disabilities complete tertiary education in Cambodia.

Our community support teams work with rural communities to identify and support people who need Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) services, including children who need support to attend education.

As well as arranging P&O treatment, Exceed staff help with school uniforms, school fees, learning materials, providing bicycles for travel to school and working with schools to make them accessible for children with disabilities.

Our video features Srey Hang, who lives in rural Cambodia. She was born with tetra-amelia syndrome and is a young woman who epitomises inspiration, determination and courage in the face of adversity.

With support from Exceed Worldwide, the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals, her family and others Srey has been able to use assistive devices like a powered wheelchair and a Glasshouse mouse and - against the odds - has attended and excelled at school. This is a remarkable achievement, as many children with disabilities in Cambodia either don’t go to school or drop out.

Despite the many challenges she faces, Srey Hang is one of the top five students in her selective high school and intends to go to University.

Let’s talk about women and children.

https://exceedworldwide.enthuse.com/profile

In Cambodia, 33% of Exceed patients are female and 30% are children. We work hard to encourage women to access services and to attract female students to train as Prosthetic and Orthotic (P&O) clinicians and technicians. The majority of graduates from Exceed’s P&O school in Phnom Penh are women.

Children are frequent visitors to our centres in Phnom Penh, Kompong Som and Kompong Chhnang, with a large range of conditions, including cerebral palsy, polio and scoliosis.

Two-year old Sok Din’s grandmother brought him to our Kompong Som (Sihanoukville) centre in January 2023. She noticed that he was very weak and was unable to stand without help, when he returned from hospital after being quite ill.

Sok Din’s situation was assessed immediately by Exceed Prosthetist Orthotists and Physiotherapists and an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) was supplied and fitted within two days. The device was comfortable and stable and, after gait training, Sok Din was able to stand and walk like the other children in his community, as his grandmother had requested.

Sok Din’s grandmother was given advice about using and taking care of the AFO and a date for a follow-up appointment. We thank them for letting us tell their story.

Thank you for your support, share our story and tomorrow we’ll talk about our community support teams and how important Prosthetic and Orthotic services are for the educational prospects of children with disabilities.
