Cambodia students who research on the construction of artificial reef in order to create an enhanced habitat for fish. - Who's the Artificial Reef Team?
The Artificial Reef Team, made up of a team of senior students from the Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia (PUC), majoring in Environmental Science. For our final year project, we are constructing an artificial reef at Koh Seh Island, in Kep, Cambodia. We install the artificial reefs to create an enhanced fish habitat and to investigate whether the presence of artificial reef will increase fish di
versity in the region.
- What Are We Doing? A whole suite of things! First, we will be getting a visual census of the fish population in Koh Seh, to find out what are the types (and estimate numbers) of fish that hang out there. Right now, we know that Koh Seh is a remote island, renowned for its rich of marine resources. Sadly, it has been facing years of illegal fishing activities that have slowly deteriorated the marine ecosystem there. There is a need to protect Koh Seh's marine ecosystem now, or we may risk losing its pristine environment forever. We believe that our project will provide a great habitat for fishes and other marine life, enabling greater biodiversity and thereby sustaining a habitat of diverse marine organisms. Moreover, we hope that the fish population will increase, which would ensure long-term sustainability of local fishermen's livelihoods for the future.
- Diving Deep for the First Time
As it is our first foray into the marine field, we know that this will be a huge challenge for us. All of us will be learning how to dive for the first time. Thanks to the Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) for guiding and supporting us on technical training. Since doing research requires a strong commitment and big amount of expense, we are now struggling with financial support and we hope to raise enough money to run our project in order to achieve our goal.
- Help Us Build Better Homes for the Fish
Your help is very important for our project and essential to our country as it is a part of conserving natural resources and encourages the next generation to do more research and more importantly, it inspires people to know that when it comes to protecting the environment, it is not about “My duty or Your duty” but it is a work which is needed to be done by Us, Together. Thank you for helping us to make a difference.
