World Cleanup Day (WCD) initiated by Let’s Do It! World, a global movement that connects people and organizations around the world with the goal to make the planet clean and free of waste. World Cleanup Day held on 15 September 2018 which involved 150 countries from around the world. This movement aims to bring 380 million people or about 5 percent of the world’s population to involve in simultaneous cleanup action. WCD Cambodia is seeking to mobilize 5% of population, approximately 800,000 volunteers from different sectors in 25 provinces to act together in 1 day to clean up trashes the entire country.
As an NGO, we are proud to bring more people especially youths to participate in the event and clean our environment. We gathered around 30 volunteers from different universities in Phnom Penh to join WCD2018. We totally collected about 50 Eco-plastic bags of waste such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic glass, aluminum cans, glass bottles, cigarette butt, paper, leftover food.
We started to clean up from Ministry of Environment and walked along the street to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Australian Embassy then we continued to Cleanup around Jet Containers and Russian embassy. After that we Cleanup along Samdach Sothearos Boulevard to Preah Soramarit Boulevard. We turned right at Preah Ang Yukanthor Street and Cleanup around the areas of Wat Botumvatey.
Finally, we started to Cleanup along the way back to the Ministry of Environment. After the event, everyone met up at the Ministry of Environment for a photo session, we discussed and are willing to be committed in this activity in the future again. We don’t only Cleanup for today only, but we do encourage our volunteers to keep doing this activity for a clean city and clean environment.
