Former AUCA President Jonathan Becker Appointed Acting President of Bard College
The Bard College Board of Trustees today announced the appointment of Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jonathan Becker as acting president, as the Board of Trustees launches a comprehensive search for a new permanent leader. Becker will begin his new position on July 1, immediately following the retirement of Bard’s 14th President, Leon Botstein, who has served for more than 50 years. Becker will chair a newly formed Leadership Council, comprising the College’s senior leadership, to work with the board and to ensure their expertise and diverse perspectives inform Bard’s path forward.
A long-time leader within the Bard network, Becker has played a key role in strengthening international academic partnerships, including the enduring collaboration between Bard College and American University of Central Asia. During his tenure as Interim President of AUCA (2019, 2021–2023), he helped lead the joint Bard–AUCA initiative that enabled nearly 200 Afghan students to continue their education following the fall of Kabul in 2021.
Throughout his career, Becker has championed access to higher education for students affected by conflict, displacement, and political instability, while advancing Bard’s global vision of liberal arts education.
