Master of Arts degree in Applied Psychology at the American University of Central Asia offers an opportunity to receive professional knowledge and skills in the most relevant fields of psychology. The Program is open to students with diverse backgrounds who wish to develop or improve their academic and work qualifications in psychology. The Program’s curriculum focuses on science-based training of applied professional work as well as engages in discussions of contemporary issues in research, theory and practice in the field. Interdisciplinary coursework provides a nuanced coverage of relevant topics in the field and prepares graduates for a variety of professional job and academia. Three separate concentrations are available from our MA Program:
1.MA in Psychological Counseling: This program will provide students with knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to work as professional counsellors in a wide variety of settings. The program is based upon coherent theoretical frameworks, generates a working knowledge of assessment procedures, develops professional skills and ensures a keen awareness of ethical principles and issues among its students.
2.MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology: This program prepares its graduates to apply current research and principles of human behavior to a variety of organizational settings in business and industry, including human resources departments, and management consulting firms.
3.MA in General Psychology: This is a flexible program for students who wish to explore more than one areas of psychology. It also suits students who wish to shape a more individualized coursework to fit special interests and needs. All programs also prepare students for admission to doctoral programs in related fields. The MA Program in Applied Psychology will consider applications from students holding baccalaureate (and higher) degrees from accredited institutions. The application package includes the following documents:
1. AUCA Admission Application Form available at https://www.auca.kg/en/admissions/
2. All applicants to the MA Program in Applied Psychology must demonstrate a sufficient level of English language knowledge. Students may choose to take the AUCA Admissions Exams, or opt to take their equivalent. For English Proficiency, students must take one of the following exams:
o AUCA English Language Proficiency Test or
o Official TOEFL Certificate (paper-based or internet-based) – report to AUCA institution code 0419 or
o Official IELTS Certificate – report to AUCA institution code 8306 for undergraduate applications and 8305 for graduate applications. Applicants are exempt if
o English is the exclusive language of instruction at the undergraduate institution;or
o Applicants have earned a degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university not more than 5 years prior to the anticipated semester of enrollment
The required proficiency scores are:
AUCA English Language Proficiency Test – 480 or Minimum TOEFL requirement: 54 internet (iBT); 480 paper-based test (PBT)
Minimum IELTS requirement: 5.0
Successful applicants whose English Proficiency exam scores are lower than the minimum requirements may be admitted conditionally and required to complete an Intensive English Language course prior to the start of the program. (Schedule of exams is available at https://www.auca.kg/en/admissions/)
3. Statement of Purpose (approximately 500 words describing your interests, career and academic objectives and ambitions in the field of psychology, and how the MA program in Applied Psychology at AUCA can help you to achieve those goals).
4. A Curriculum Vitae.
5. Two letters of recommendation (from professors or other individuals familiar with the student's intellectual abilities)
6. Copy of Bachelor’s Degree or Specialist Diploma or if currently enrolled in university, a certificate from school certifying that an applicant is in the last year (Note: Upon admission to AUCA, the original copy of Bachelor's Degree / Specialist Diploma or confirmation of degree completion must be submitted to the Office of Admissions).
7. Copy of high school diploma or vocational education certificate
8. Copy of passport information pages and for non-Kyrgyz citizens living in Kyrgyzstan, a copy of the Kyrgyz Republic visa page (international students must check in with the Student Visa and Registration Coordinator within 2 days of arrival to submit copies of their Kyrgyz Visa and complete Ministry of Foreign Affairs registration paperwork)
9. Medical certificate (Form 086-Y), confirming all vaccinations and immunizations as well as health screenings for Tuberculosis
10. 4 Photographs (3 x 4 cm)
11. A non-refundable application fee of 500 Kyrgyz Soms (or $15 USD)
