Women in STEAM Initiative Giving girls a voice in STEAM

18/08/2026

We witnessed a beautiful moment during one of our mentorship sessions. Three young girls had the opportunity to hold and explore awards and recognitions earned by our Founder, Caroline Nyaga.

They read the certificates.
They looked at the achievements.
They felt the weight of the awards. πŸ†
And their reaction was simply:

β€œWow!” ❀️

But what they were holding was more than an award.

They were holding possibility.

They were seeing that it is possible for a young African woman to create impact, lead, innovate, work in STEM, inspire others and have that work recognised locally and internationally.

Representation is powerful because sometimes a girl needs to see it before she can believe she can become it.

At Women in STEAM Initiative, we are committed to creating these moments β€” spaces where girls can ask questions, explore STEM careers, meet role models, build confidence and begin to see themselves as future innovators, leaders and problem-solvers.

Today, they held someone else's awards.

Tomorrow, we hope they will be holding their own. πŸ†βœ¨

And when that day comes, we hope another little girl will look at them and say:

β€œWow… I can do this too.”

This is the power of mentorship.
This is the power of representation.
This is the future we are building.

Dream. Build. Lead. Be recognised.

🌱 Helping Students See Themselves as Future STEM Problem-Solvers
STEM education is not only about learning conceptsβ€”it is about helping young people see themselves as creators, innovators and problem-solvers.

At our centre, we gave students a STEM Mentorship Worksheet designed to take them beyond simply learning STEM skills. The students were encouraged to:

πŸ”Ή Visualise themselves in future STEM careers
πŸ”Ή Identify challenges within their communities
πŸ”Ή Develop their own STEM solution ideas
πŸ”Ή Think through an action plan for turning their ideas into reality
πŸ”Ή Reflect on what they have learned, what inspires them and the impact they want to create

Activities like these are important because students need opportunities to connect what they learn in the classroom with real-world problems around them. When a student can identify a challenge, imagine a solution and think about how they can contribute, they begin to develop more than technical knowledgeβ€”they build critical thinking, creativity, confidence, problem-solving and a sense of purpose.

Most importantly, we want our students to understand that STEM careers are not distant possibilities reserved for someone else. They can see themselves as engineers, scientists, technologists, innovators and creators shaping the future.

We are not just teaching STEM. We are helping young people imagine the futureβ€”and realise that they have a role to play in building it. πŸš€

πŸš€ AUGUST STEM HOLIDAY SESSIONS: LEARN, EXPLORE & CREATE!

This August, our STEM holiday sessions are giving students the opportunity to learn by doing, explore technology and have fun while solving problems! πŸ”¬πŸ’»πŸ€–

From Scratch programming to exploring Virtual Reality (VR) and building hands-on projects using STEM kits, students are discovering that STEM is more than just theory. It is about asking questions, experimenting, creating, making mistakes, finding solutions and trying again.

Through these practical projects, students are developing important 21st-century skills including critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and problem-solving. They are learning to work together, share ideas and approach challenges from different perspectives.

For some students, this is their first time interacting with VR gadgets, sensors, robotics components and electronic kits β€” and seeing their excitement as they explore what these tools can do is incredible! 🌟

Most importantly, they are having fun while learning. πŸŽ‰ Every new project gives them an opportunity to say, β€œI made this!” and build confidence in their ability to create and innovate.

At Women in STEAM Initiative, we believe children learn best when they are given the opportunity to explore, experiment and create. We are nurturing not just STEM skills, but the curiosity, confidence and problem-solving mindset they need for the future.

Bringing STEM to Every Child, Everywhere!, Women in STEAM Initiative in NAROK COUNTYπŸŒπŸš€

At Women in STEAM Initiative, we believe that where a child is born should never determine the opportunities they have to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

We were honored to partner with Young Women of Africa (YWOA) Kenya Chapter and other STEM-focused organizations in implementing the "Bridging the Digital Divide: Empowering Girls Through STEM, Innovation and Digital Literacy" program at Ildungisho Comprehensive School in Narok County.

The initiative brought together more than 100 learners from underserved communities for an engaging day of digital literacy, coding, robotics, cybersecurity awareness, innovation activities, mentorship, and career guidance. While the program was designed to empower girls to pursue STEAM pathways, it also created an opportunity for boys to experience the exciting world of technology, ensuring that every learner who participated left inspired.

One of the most touching moments was watching students interact with electronic devices for the very first time. Their excitement, curiosity, and eagerness to learn reminded us why expanding access to STEM education is so important. Every smile, every question, and every hands-on activity reinforced our belief that talent is everywhereβ€”opportunity is not. By bringing STEM experiences closer to rural communities, we are helping bridge that gap.

Women in STEAM Initiative was proudly represented by our Hands-on STEM Trainer, Knice Mulumbi, who facilitated interactive robotics and digital learning sessions. His passion and dedication inspired learners to see technology not just as something they use, but as something they can create, innovate with, and build a future around.

This partnership reflects the power of collaboration in creating meaningful impact. By working together with organizations that share our vision, we are expanding access to quality STEM education and contributing to the achievement of Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9).

To our partners, thank you for trusting us to be part of this impactful initiative. To the learners of Narok, thank you for your enthusiasm, courage, and curiosity. You are the innovators, engineers, scientists, and technology leaders of tomorrow, and we cannot wait to see what you achieve.

Together, we are not just teaching STEMβ€”we are opening doors, changing mindsets, and building a future where every child, regardless of where they come from, has the opportunity to thrive.
