In 1997, Esther, a single mother from Kisumu, lost her job after standing against corruption. With two young children and no income, she turned to God, reading Psalm 9 aloud through tears and whispering, “God will not forget me.” Even when reduced to selling vegetables by the roadside, her hope never wavered. Months later, a former colleague remembered her integrity and recommended her for a job in a Christian NGO, opening the door to a stable new life. Today, Esther testifies, “People forgot me, but God never did. He remembered every tear.”

Psalm 9:18 shows that those who are oppressed and suffering can place their hope in the Lord. The Psalmist reminds God’s people that although the wicked may seem to prosper, the Lord never abandons the afflicted. Our hope should rest not on our circumstances or human justice but on God’s enduring faithfulness. Even in times of despair, we should trust in Him.

As Christian pilgrims, we should place our hope firmly in God, trusting that He never forgets the oppressed or the afflicted. We should remain steadfast in faith, even when circumstances seem unfair or overwhelming, knowing that our hope in Him is imperishable. This means praying persistently, trusting His justice, and living with patience, confident that God’s faithfulness will sustain us and bring ultimate deliverance.

Muriuki, a young traveler on a high mountain path, feels the wind rise and the cliffs close in. Panic grips his heart as dark clouds cover the sun. But then he hears the steady voice of his guide: “I’m right behind you. Keep going—I’ve got your back.” The traveler takes a deep breath, steadies his steps, and presses forward—not because the path has become easier, no. He realizes that he is not walking the path alone. That is what hope in God does—it replaces fear with trust.
Isaiah 41:10 reminded God’s people that they had no reason to fear, for the Lord had already stood with them in every moment of weakness and uncertainty. The verse showed that God had strengthened them, upheld them, and rescued them with His righteous hand. Their hope did not rest in their own power, but in the assurance that God had been present - guiding, defending, and sustaining them. Though challenges had surrounded them, this promise declared that God had never abandoned them. Their confidence and hope were secured because the Lord had already proven Himself faithful.
As pilgrims of faith, fear may try to overwhelm your heart: fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of walking alone. Yet God speaks clearly: “Do not fear, for I am with you.” Let this promise be your anchor as you walk the year ahead, as you walk this faith journey. Let hope in God silence fear and give you courage to keep moving forward firmly.

A little boy, Mutembei, loses sight of his mother in a crowded market. In panic, he cries out, calling her name. Then, he hears her gentle voice respond, “I’m here.” In the midst of the market noise and confusion, that one voice brought the boy peace. His search was over; all he needed was to wait! This is the kind of confidence we have when we cry out to God: He hears, He responds.

Micah lived in a time of moral decay and national despair. Yet, in the midst of this darkness, he declared unwavering hope in God. While people and circumstances could fail, God remained faithful. Micah’s assurance was not rooted in the situational context, but in the character of God—the One who hears and responds.

As Christian pilgrims, let us hold fast to this truth: God hears us. Even when our journey feels long, the road lonely, the wait heavy, and our voices small, swallowed by the noise and chaos of life, He is listening. Patiently waiting on the Lord is where our strength lies. With God on our side, we are never alone. Let us call on Him, wait in hope, and walk with confidence; God hears us and answers in His perfect time.

Nyawira, a young hiker, begins climbing a steep mountain trail. At first, her energy carries her swiftly, but soon her legs ache, and her breath grows short. Just when she is about to give up, an older guide appears, offering water, encouragement, and a steady pace. With the older guide’s help, the young hiker regains her strength and finishes the climb joyously.
Isaiah spoke to a weary people, worn down by hardship. Through the prophet, God reminded the Israelites how frail human strength is and that His strength never runs dry. Those who place their hope and trust in Him will rise above discouragement and weariness. The eagle, soaring high above the storm, becomes a vivid image of what happens when we draw strength from God.
Are we worried, physically, emotionally, or spiritually, about what will happen to us in this new year? Let us pause for a moment and reflect on the Lord’s ability to lift us above every circumstance. Let us trust in His power to refresh our souls. True strength does not come from working harder or drafting new year resolutions; it comes from fully surrendering ourselves
to the Lord. He will lift us up, help us endure, and give us the power to press on.
