Are Schools Ready for Senior School Pathways Under CBE?

As we move closer to the Senior School transition under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, one quiet question keeps surfacing among parents:

👉 Are schools truly ready?

It’s a fair question.

Under guidance from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Senior School pathways are designed to offer specialised learning in:

STEM

Social Sciences

Arts & Sports Science

Applied Sciences & Technical (for clearer career guidance)

But pathways are not just ideas on paper.
They require preparation.

For example:

🔬 STEM needs equipped laboratories and trained science teachers.
🎭 Arts & Sports need studios, performance spaces, and coaching.
🌱 Applied Sciences require practical environments — farms, workshops, technical tools.

This is where readiness matters.

Some schools are well-positioned. Others are still adjusting. And that reality should not cause panic — but it should encourage informed conversations.

As parents, instead of reacting with fear, we should start asking constructive questions:

✔ What pathway(s) will this school offer?
✔ Do they have the facilities to support them properly?
✔ Are teachers trained for specialised instruction?
✔ How will learners access practical exposure?

CBE will not succeed because of policy documents alone.
It will succeed because schools prepare — and parents engage thoughtfully.

📌 Readiness is not about perfection.
📌 It is about direction, planning, and honesty.

This week, we explored three important shifts every parent should reflect on:

✔ Being bright does not automatically mean choosing STEM
✔ Before selecting a pathway, ask better questions
✔ Pressure may produce compliance — but guidance builds growth

The message is simple:

👉 CBE is about alignment, not prestige.
👉 It is about fit, not fear.

When we guide our children based on their interests, strengths, and confidence , not comparison , they don’t just cope. They thrive.

As parents navigating this transition, the real question is:

Are we choosing from anxiety… or from understanding?

📘 THE QUIET PRESSURE WE PUT ON OUR CHILDREN — WITHOUT REALISING IT

Most parents don’t pressure their children because they are harsh.
They pressure them because they care.

But under the new Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, we are being invited to pause and reflect.

Sometimes the greatest pressure doesn’t come from school.
It comes from:

Comparing our child to someone else’s

Wanting them to choose the “safe” pathway

Fearing what relatives or neighbours will say

Using our 8-4-4 experiences to judge a different system

Guided by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), CBE encourages us to focus on fit, growth, and competence — not prestige or competition.

When a child feels constant pressure to “prove” themselves:

Confidence slowly erodes

Fear replaces curiosity

Performance becomes about approval, not learning

But when a child feels heard:

Confidence grows

Effort becomes internal

Ownership increases

📌 Pressure may produce compliance.
📌 Guidance produces growth.

As parents navigating this new system, the question is not:
❌ “Which pathway looks impressive?”

It is:
✅ “Where will my child grow with confidence?”

CBE is not just changing the curriculum.

📘 BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A SENIOR SCHOOL PATHWAY, ASK THESE QUESTIONS

As Senior School conversations begin, many parents are asking:

👉 Which pathway should my child choose?

Before you look at school rankings, subject combinations, or what other parents are doing — pause.

Under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework guided by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), pathway selection is meant to be guided by learner fit, not fear.

Here are 6 questions every parent should ask first:

1️⃣ What does my child enjoy doing — even without pressure?
2️⃣ Where do they show confidence instead of anxiety?
3️⃣ Do they prefer practical work, discussion, creativity, or investigation?
4️⃣ How do they respond to challenge — do they persist or withdraw?
5️⃣ What subjects energize them instead of drain them?
6️⃣ Have I truly listened to their voice?

These questions matter more than:
❌ Prestige
❌ Comparison
❌ “What will people say?”
❌ What worked for someone else’s child

📌 A pathway chosen from pressure often leads to frustration.
📌 A pathway chosen from alignment builds confidence.

CBE is not asking us to lower ambition.
It is asking us to match ambition with ability and interest.

👉 The goal is not to choose what sounds impressive.
👉 The goal is to choose where your child can thrive consistently.
