KENYAN STUDENTS IN UK SEASONAL WORKERS SCHEME SHARE EXPERIENCES AND LESSONS
Kenyan students from the Kenya School of Agriculture and Bukura Agricultural College working in the UK under the Seasonal Workers Scheme, met with CS Sen. Mutahi Kagwe in London. The students are attached to Charlton’s Farm, a fruit packaging company.
The session opened with remarks from the Kenya High Commission London, who assured students of continued support. The KSA Director thanked them for attending on their day off and encouraged them to represent Kenya with pride.
Students shared their experiences, noting that over 200 Kenyans work at the farm alongside colleagues from other countries. While they initially faced challenges adapting to the weather and new environment, they highlighted their strong English skills, discipline and hard work as key strengths that have earned some promotions and better pay.
They cited key lessons including the importance of discipline, time management, quality control, cleanliness and exposure to advanced agricultural technology. They also described a supportive work environment with fair treatment and structured breaks.
On achievements, many reported investing their earnings in land, housing, dairy projects, education and family support. They said the experience has broadened their mindset and future ambitions.
The CS commended the students and reminded them they are ambassadors of Kenya, stressing that the programme’s success depends on their discipline and reputation. He encouraged them to gain skills abroad and apply them back home, while upholding integrity and avoiding actions that could jeopardise the programme.
Students also challenged leaders to boost local fruit production and value addition. In response, there was optimism that such investments could eventually create more jobs in Kenya.
