Your Patient Arrives After an Accident… Their Intestines Are Outside the Abdomen. What Would You Do?

A patient is rushed into the emergency department after a road traffic accident.

You notice that part of the intestines is protruding through the abdominal wound.

What’s your immediate nursing action?

Many people think:

“Push the intestines back inside.”

Never do that.

This is an abdominal evisceration, and it is a life-threatening emergency.

As the nurse:

• Stay calm and perform a rapid ABC assessment (airway, breathing, circulation).

• Do not attempt to push the exposed organs back into the abdomen.

• Cover the exposed organs with sterile gauze or sterile dressings moistened with sterile normal saline to help protect the tissue from drying out.

• Minimize further contamination and avoid applying direct pressure to the exposed organs.

• Notify the surgical team or activate the emergency response immediately according to your hospital’s protocol.

• Continue monitoring the patient’s vital signs, prepare for urgent surgical management, and document your findings and interventions.

Remember:
Your job is to protect the exposed organs not replace them.
