If you are a student from a humble background, the reality is that you don’t have the luxury of exploration when choosing a college or university.

For you, the priority is securing a course in an accredited institution, and one with a fairly good student experience and, if possible, one that is accessible from home.

Many people won’t tell you this, but the reality is:

1. If you join a university near home, you can commute, saving on accommodation and meals.

2. Your parents can focus on raising tuition fees, instead of heavy upkeep.

3. You can easily bring "omena" , "mahindi" , "matoke" and cook from your off-campus accommodation to reduce expenses.

4. You can more easily start a small business or side hustle nearby.

So, don’t be misled by the idea of “exploration.” Once you graduate, you will have plenty of time to explore.

Also, remember that all universities in Kenya offer diverse student experiences and cultures. So focus on finding a suitable, vibrant institution near home or one your parents can support without having to sell a goat to raise your transport to school.

The choice is yours! you can ignore this now, and learn it the hard way later.
