Our curriculum is borrowed from Dr. Maria Montessori principles. She
believed that at the age of 0 – 6 years, a child have an absorbent mind and everything taught to him/her is absorbed for future use. She believed that learning should be integrated with the whole life of the child. Therefore, Tassel schools have capitalized on these two principles. Children are born learning and with constant readiness and ability to learn. With a rich environment, variety of age appropriate materials and good teachers, a rich learning environment is created to help the child learn and grow. Our participatory Montessori curriculum prepares ground for our kindergarten, primary school pupils and even beyond primary school. Reading readiness material like phonetic analysis, word attack skills compose words relating them to letters of alphabet thus fostering vocabulary, improving communication skills, writing and makes reading easy. Mathematics material in the early years lays the foundation for latter cognitive development. Rods, cubes, geometrical solids enable the child to relate concepts. Senses are the “door way to the mind”. Through interaction with sensorial materials, children develop and refine their five senses (hearing, touch, smell, sight and taste). Sensory and manipulation not only aid development of maturing senses but intellectual growth. Practical life develops coordination, concentration and development. It’s a variety of daily life activities enhancing life skills for easy environmental adaptation. Science curriculum includes a sound introduction to botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, geology and astronomy. It develops a lifelong interest in observing nature and discovering more about the world. Teachers introduce history and geography as early as age three. Once a child is given a sound foundation, the work of our teachers is to nurture the child’s ability through encouragement. Montessori curriculum is holistic and cuts across kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. This method allows the child to develop at their own pace and experience the joy of learning. It develops the child’s independence and self-esteem. It also provides the educator with a better understanding of the child’s development. Teachers are able to handle all the challenges that the child might be facing thus teaching and learning becomes easier and fan.
